the more i think about it the more villa move could happen

Big club , high profile manager , making signings that show statement of intent + loads of money and a chance to be the main man still

Exactly. Like it or not, Villa are a club with a bigger profile than us - though many on here just won't have it. If Biss moves for £50M and doubles his wages now, he still has every chance of moving for a lot more (and another indecent wage hike!) in 12 or 18 months time

I really don't think that's true. I think Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard have every chance of rivaling Leicester, West Ham and Tottenham for 5th - this season. Next season, with continued investment, they could be a real threat to the top 4. Gerrard's the real deal and their investment seems particularly wise. They're a very real threat at the top end of the table.

It's a game of opinions. That's why we love it. :amex:

I'll travel back to 1920s England and eat every hat and cap in your country if Aston Villa ends up 5th.

I totally agree and only time will tell either way. I am curious though - do you not rate Steven Gerrard as a manager? Or is it more wishful thinking that we'll develop faster than them?

What exactly has Gerrard done that is impressing some of you so much? Is winning the Scottish Premiership in a two horse race when one of the horses was lame what convinced you?

I have not seen anything that makes the massive hype about him convince me that he deserves the outstanding manager plaudits being bandied around

Convince me

Really? Here it is for you:

There are a handful of players who have been worth the money spent (Martinez, Watkins, McGinn, maybe Cash and Targett) but that is against an incredible turnover of players and an average spend of £100m a season in the last 5 years, with little coming back the other way apart from Grealish. And that’s just transfer fees, it doesn’t cover wages etc.

Read down that list of dross they have bought, McCormack, Wesley, Gestede etc, and tell me that this shows wise investment! For every good player they have bought, there are several that they have wasted money on and got rid of for peanuts!

I was very impressed with them in the cup game against Man U last night. No longer a one man team relying upon picking up fouls around the penalty area.

The same people who gave him an ovation at the Amex I imagine, who are lauding him now. He has done nothing to prove 'top manager' credentials in his short time in the managerial game, but has lost a fair few matches as Villa boss. Unlike our Connor G, who was a boyhood Gerrard fan, I believe, Biss will hardly be lured by the prospect of playing under him I wouldn't imagine.

Whatever you say about Gerrard, his does have nice hair. That alone should be enough to allow him to shrug off any criticism!

Tbf Rangers not only won the league but were quite amazing and their results/performances would have won most SPL titles in the last 20 years so he definitely should get some credit for that, despite it being a two-horse race, especially since before that season most people thought it was a one horse (Celtic) jog over the goal line and its not like he spent a shitload of money to improve his Rangers team. So he deserves credit for that.

Then during the CL qualifier against Malmö where Rangers were 1-0 up and Malmö had a player sent off just before half time, they made some remarkably poor tactical decisions and lost both the game and the CL spot and I think that created a bit of a question mark in the eyes of not least the Rangers fans. But I imagine he learned from that, like people do.

I think he could be a good manager for Villa but the hype right now is silly and exaggerated. He has only managed them for two months and while results have been fine so far its just too early to say anything about him or Villa.

When Gerrard took over at Villa in November, they were seven points behind the team in sixth (us) in 15th place. New manager bounce saw them beat us in his first game to close the gap to us to four points. They were then six points behind Wolves in sixth.

Seven games later they are 13th. They now sit five points behind us and eleven points and a game in hand behind the team in sixth. Their goal difference has improved by a single goal during his tenure and they are out of the FA Cup in the third round.

They have had a fairly tough run of games, but there is nothing in their results to suggest that they will be challenging for fifth, or even overtaking all of the teams in the chasing pack to challenge for a European spot. Gerrard could turn out to be very good, but current stats suggest that their results haven't changed massively since he arrived and the poor start they had means that their results do need to change massively to make your suggestion likely. To reach the 66 points that 5th placed Leicester got last year, they would need to take 44 points from 19 games. That would mean half a season of exceeding the points return that the Champions managed across last season.

It's easy to dismiss anyone's achievements as if they're irrelevant but winning a league title is particularly difficult. His Rangers team was unbeaten in the league in winning the title, that's one hell of an achievement and rarely happens across the world. Having no competition makes going unbeaten even more impressive, they didn't need to maintain such a high standard but they did.

I don't need to try and convince you, we'll see what happens for the rest of the season. On another night, Villa win comfortably at Old Trafford to go along with the good league form. In truth, going out of the FA Cup is probably actually to their benefit.

Going back to McCormack is incredible. Would you criticise the current Brighton recruitment team for the singing of Leon Best or Leroy Lita?

I was merely providing some names off a long list, but that’s why I gave the link too so you can make your own mind up. Actually it’s been even worse over the last 3 years than prior to that!

Anyway I have never heard the Brighton recruitment team sing and don’t know either of the songs you refer to

Brighton factually.....

Yeah right he does, a complete and utter waste of hair.
Folks like me would kill for a mop like that, boy I could make a handsome quiff, maybe have a neat flat top in the summer....
people like Gerrard piss me off, such a thick mop with a wonderful hairline and with all that he has a bland boring haircut, such an utter utter waste of hair...

Makes my piss boil.

Where football is concerned, is there anything other than wishful thinking?

Gerrard appears to be an excellent manager. But Potter's a better coach. Currently, when all the ****ing endless noise and lazy punditry about big clubs is filtered out, the Albion have better players in most positions and are a better team (imho). In terms of development, Brighton were a League 1 club just over a decade ago and playing at Withdean. The club's development is EXTRAORDINARY. We are also all in with a strategy that targets (and plays) the best value and young talent according to Tony's algorithms. This appears to be a supercharged version of Southampton's (old) and more targeted version of Chelsea's (recent) academy model; elite level sustainability is clearly the desired outcome. If Potter and his players continue to find ways to put the ball in the net - there are very few sides in the PL that can out-football Brighton. Ambition Villa (with Gerrard at the helm and Purslow's money) will always make more noise than Brighton and undoubtedly sign more established talent - but Brighton are currently the ninth best side in the PL and with more belief i.e. casting off the psychological baggage of believing big club hyperbole, our club can overachieve on its stated 'established top10' objective. However, if Potter left...

So we tell him if he doesn't want to stay with us and sign a new contract for silly money, we will make him run his contract down and he can play with the U23s until he goes, or we offer him a couple of million bonus to sign a new new contract with the agreement we sell him to a super club therefore we get the full £50 million, he gets a couple of million from us up front and a larger slice of the £50 million transfer fee. Everyone's a winner.

I wouldn’t make him play for the U23 unless there was a reason for it. If he was giving his all then so be it. At the end of the day what we offer him a week over the course of 18 Months above what he gets now he will most likely recoup anyway as a signing in fee.
If he signs a new deal great, if not and a good offer comes we accept it but it’s still
His decision. If he decides to run 18 months down I’ll enjoy watching a fantastic player only disappointment will be we didn’t get the fee we may deserve for assisting his development but at the same time he would have done a lot for the club
