Interesting. I guessed it might be him when he told the police that he had seen her leaving with two men. Seemed a bit odd that he'd volunteer that information some week or so after the event. Anyway innocent until proven guilty and all that.

Ah. He's a former lecher at a college. Never trust one of them.

No Clifton College, he's a typical public school eccentric teacher, obviously with loadsa money if he owned that house, who apparently according to the Headmaster "took early retirement" nine years ago (aged 56..) Sounds like there were some worries about him then. Usual technique for public schools to get shot of teachers they know or suspect could be a liability.

There's nothing to beat a Midwinter Murder on the telly, is there?

It seems to me that the TRUTH of the matter is that the media like to have a story of personal tragedy running across the holiday period. This one ticked the right boxes and made the front pages and TV news bulletins. The fact that it can be packaged up as a very accessible, easy to follow, story - just like a soap opera incident that captures the nation's imagination - makes it all the more suitable for the big media treatment.

People want to know "what happens next". Was it the boyfriend wot dun it? Some people will obviously be slightly disappointed that the poor victim wasn't found under the patio. And have "the couple walking the dog" been ruled out of suspicion yet?

Main point she was young, beautiful and blond. If she looked like Widdy we wouldn't care. If she WAS Widdy....
