Before I moved to Croydon I didn't really think the rivalry was felt that strongly amongst Palace fans anymore but although they sometimes rant about the likes of Charlton or millwall pretty much all palace fans young & old see Brighton as their main rivals and I really don't think that will ever change!

Other football fans may be scratching their heads about this strange rivalry but should the two sides find themselves playing in the same league again regularly, the passion will be as strong as ever without a doubt

And despite Palace being in a higher division for most of the last hundred years, Brighton still have a better record in games between the clubs.

Brighton have won a major trophy (Charity Shield) the palace have not.

We got to the cup final and they followed us a few yaers later.

We played attacking football with Peter Ward, they were proud of their defence.

Brighton are an older club and run out to Sussex by the sea, the song of regimental band of the Royal Sussex regiment, a song people went into battle singing. Palace run out to glad all over a naff 1970s song, and they play it when they score.

Palace are plastic stripey nigel train spotters from er croydon, a town like watfod on the edge of london. We are a regional club with fans from all over the county, from the docks of newhaven, to the country, to the city itself.

We took 7,000 up to them when they beat us 5-0 and well, they said the trains were not working for the rematch ;-)

I do. Had the entire side except a bit left for segregation. In the 1970s we also had the entire White horse stand a few times. Ask your old timers on that one tho'.

Good Old Sussex By The Sea , sung by soldiers as they marched to war and into battle during World War One.
Good Old Sussex By The Sea , sung by Albion fans around the world nearly a century later.
Palace are just a tinpot club , with no class , in the suburbs , owned by a geezer who should be doing adverts for Tango.

In 1976-77 season the teams met no less than five times: twice in the league and three times in an F.A Cup tie. After stalemates at the Goldstone and Selhurst Park the FA Cup Second Replay was held at Stamford Bridge that Palace narrowly won. Mullery was incensed by some diabolical refereeing decisions from Ron Challis including a penalty that had to be retaken and a disallowed goal! After provocation from the Palace fans he justifiably flung down five pound notes change into a puddle and screamed 'You're not worth that, Palace' whilst gesticulating at them.

He instantly became a legend with the Brighton and a villain in Croydon and it was then that the rivalry really kicked in, both on and off the field, quite often reaching boiling point.

Ron Challis - still a **** , until the day he dies. I had the photo of Mullers from the Argus on the back of my Biology textbook at school.
