Whether he got the ball or not is irrelevant. It's the same as any foul - it doesn't matter if you get the ball, what matters is how safe the challenge is. This was a challenge that ignored Murray's safety and resulted in him going off injured.

The challenge the keeper made was only ever going to result in him taking Murray out, regardless of whether he gets the ball, which makes it a foul.

Whether he got the ball is not irrelevant - it's the central point of the argument.

'Taking someone out' is not necessarily a foul. Fact is the ball was there to be won, and Davis got there first - so who was reckless? Davis or Murray?

Talk about twisting the rules to suit your thin argument - you're sounding like Nigel Adkins.

It is irrelevant in as much as the rules do not take it into consideration. There is nothing in the definition of a foul in the laws of a game about whether the ball is played or not. The only time the ball is considered is when determining whether it is 'violent conduct' (when not challenging for a ball) or 'serious foul play' (when challenging for a ball).

A foul is determined by how safe the challenge is. If you slide out in such a fashion that you are going to collide with a player in a way that risks his safety, it is a foul.

The pedants and nitpickers are out in full force on this thread.

However, the ref didin't see it as a foul. The lino didn't see it as a foul. A large majority of the crowd didn't think it was a foul. Poyet has made zero reference to it that I know of so he probably doesn't think it was a foul. Sometimes you get disposessed of the ball legitimately and still end up getting injured - bad luck.

From where I sat in the south it looked a very good bit of 'keeping. Murray wasn't hurt by the challenge, he was hurt by the way he fell. Anyone trying to claim that was a penalty is wearing the most blue-tinted of specs IMHO

Sitting in East Stand Row R. Clear head on view of Murray pushing ball around Davis and Davis clipping his foot with his hand - clear pen.

Murrays dramatic fall did not help his case but keeper did not touch ball. From side on in North & South Stand it may appear he did - but didn't.

PS - I do wear glasses !

Davis made sure he took out Muzza and with Chaplow's cynical leaving his foot in on Ankergren not once but twice meant we had 2 key players injured. Ankergren getting his leg kicked again today led to Colchester's goal.
