So if we WIN or DRAW we are safe, regardless of the Hants result.

If we LOSE and Hants DRAW we are safe.

If we LOSE and Hants WIN, we are down.

Totally disagree. We had two bowlers with long-term injuries who were set to miss the best part of the season, we'd just released one bowler and had another who was part of the England set-up. To replace those we recruited just three: one of whom had a history of injury problems and wouldn't be expected to play many games and one of whom had never played a first-class match. On top of that, as you point out, we lacked a spinner. So we were short of at least two bowlers.

We lost RHB and were about to lose Matt Prior and made no efforts to replace either - so we were at least one batsman short. That was piss-poor recruitment by any standards.

Yes, we were unlucky that Shahzad missed most of the season but you have to allow for injuries. I appreciate that Sussex aren't a rich county and have to pay Anyon and Hatchett while they're injured and don't have the funds for an extra bowler ... but we do pay for Piolet, Beer and Liddle. We're too small a team to pay for one-day specialists like that: we should have a team for all forms of cricket and pick our one-day team from that. Again, all down to poor recruitment

Great post. Try and make a list of batsman Sussex have signed to play in the Championship in the last three years.

RHB (who was clearly shot to pieces)
Cachopa (just a punt on a Portuguese passport)

Are there any more? Right now I cannot think of any.

they need to WIN to take second place?

Yes, I believe so. It was more a hope than an expectation. There is quite a jump in winnings between third and second as well, if I recall correctly.

Just checked this:

2nd place £169,000
3rd place £88,000

That is a pretty big jump.

These are very forthright and negative opinions.

Recruitment is very difficult. The best players don't want to move and the next best want to play on Test Match grounds. Not being able to replace Matt Prior was not "piss poor" by any standards.

We often end up recruiting from the damaged goods shelves not because we want to but because we have to. Funnily enough, counties are not that keen on transferring physically and mentally perfect cricketing specimens to their rivals. Taking this into account then Shahzad, Tymal Mills and Ollie Robinson all looked like pretty decent signings.

It is also a very big shout to say that we don't need to prioritise one day cricket. Not sure that the Chief Exec or the thousands that pack out Hove on T20 nights would agree.

For the top division of the third* biggest national team sport that's rubbish

1. Football 2. Rugby are there any other bigger team sports?

I do agree, however taking wickets periodically can slow the run rate anyway, plus the fact if Yorks have wickets in hand later on they might start swinging the bat.
Agreed. We do need wickets periodically and especially those of the more freescoring batsmen (i.e. Gale at the moment).

Rain forecast in Leeds at 1.00pm and the chance of a shower at 2.00pm.

Any chance it could arrive earlier and take some overs out of this game....?

Needed that wicket but Gale is the one we want.

Apart from him all their other batters have scored slower in the match.

123/3 Hatchett bowls Lyth. A bit of moisture and cloud cover could play into our hands, a vital hour coming up.

Yep - we need to focus on our game and leave Notts to their own little battle. Anything over 250 on the final day will be a challenge though
