Frazzles, until they took almost all the flavour away from them. A running theme with most snacks, removing all the fat, salt and sugar from them until they become so unpalatable that I stop buying them.

A bit like the vegan cafe near me. Their coffee is superb but their cakes and pastries have all the nice stuff removed from them.

I was very surprised to enjoy a Vegan caramel and chocolate cheesecake in Caffè Nero recently, but I did.

Went to a hotel in Paris about 5 years ago and they made their own crisps fresh with a rolling type machine .

Based on some posts on the first crush thread, I got wondering about people's first crisps.

Who was yours?

I used to love these 1970s classics.

Seeing that packet is like a nostalgia bomb to the guts. In my mind my first crisp may have been a Golden Wonder salt and vinegar though.

In a blue bag, not green which as every crisp connoisseur knows is cheese and onion.

Which is why crisps are so shit in France and elsewhere. The fecking French, who I love btw, are utter amateurs when it comes to crisps and snacks. We are world masters, by some distance.

They know Jack by comparison. They even have nut flavoured crisps. I mean, that’s at the heart of why they became occupied. You cannot argue you’re a civilised, technologically advanced state when you produce such travesties. Hitler was quick to spot such weakness, and made a dash for Sedan…the rest, as they say, is history.

France - sort your snacks out!

I went to school with the Janaways. They were providing spuds for Smiths at the time. Bloody minted they were too. As I’m sure they still are.

Being born and raised in Bradford I naturally grew up with Seabrooks crisps.

After failing my Maths O-Level in 1987 I had to get a job and go to night school for a year to pass it in order to go to College. In this year I worked at Seabrooks Crisps on the factory floor.

I can tell you now that crisps fresh off the conveyor belt, still warm, are like an angel gently placing them on your tongue for your culinary delight.

The Allerton factory was their original one, where i worked, but was closed down and production moved to the super-modern 'Princeville' factory in another part of Bradford.

Trivia, but I know you like it on here. "Seabrook" was actually named after the founder of the company - Colin Brook (C.Brook). I saw him but never spoke to him. By the time I worked there it was his son Richard who was in charge. A lovely man, but very shy and retiring. His Daughter (who I think was called Charlotte, and yes - you would) drove a brand new Subaru XT which looked like a spaceship compared to the Fiestas and Escorts of the time.

Anyway, ramble over. Here are the packets I used to shuffle around the warehouse...

It’s a good point. The French are usually the absolute masters when it comes to the humble potato: frites, gratin, dauphinoise, algot etc etc. But they struggle with the crisp. Weird.

There is a solution.

M&S do little backs of crispy bacon. Just cut out the middle man.
