Star Trek

Whoosh ….! Where do I begin ? Stunning visuals, thrills, spills, action and great dialogue. Early in the film we meet Kirk’s soon to be heroically vaporised father and soon after the young “in yer face” stroppy kid with an attitude. Is this because of his father? or despite his father ? This an exploration of how one man finds his destiny and can change the fate of the universe along the way, oh sorry, with the help of a mixed bunch of multitalented crew members.

The Romulans have a huge axe to grind, and indeed a huge ship with such to do it with, over the loss of their planet. Unless you use a one coat paint I wouldn’t like to be on the team for this baby as there are a lot of nasty sharp bits which would require close attention. Indeed the ship looks like a cross between a half flattened Porcupine and Don King’s hairstyle and packs a punch to match. I would have thought that they could have got the air-con fixed though and because of this, the Romulans have to wear long heavy coats which does slow them down when in a firefight with the sleeker and trimmer Starfleet uniforms.

Chris Pine as Kirk has a tempestuous 2 hours of being on the wrong end of beatings , strangulations, hanging off precipitous ledges and Doctor McCoy’s medicine chest. This is an outstanding attempt to wrest back the White Vest of Heroism which has clothed Bruce Willis so well through the Die Hard series. In fact, no matter how hard you batter Kirk, he comes back and by sheer force of will, Orthodontics and persuasion he wins the day.

The key characters have all been very well cast with the exception of Mr Chekov who looks like an Andy Murray look-alike who has stumbled out of the gulag and in to an ill fitting accent and uniform. Spock is played very well with logic, science and the expected lack of emotion demanded of the role but with the odd unexpected good quip thrown in.

The only downside is the usual old stereotype of making sure that any attack on earth MUST take place either adjacent to The Eiffel Tower, The White House, Big Ben or Sydney Harbour Bridge or, in this case The Golden Gate Bridge. Please Film Makers, stop doing this !

All in all a rip-roaring adventure but with the rare and added bonus of a heart. Yes, a heart, you do care for the characters especially both Spock’s. I would assume that this is the first in a run of new Star Trek films and it pays to be one of the main characters knowing how they can’t die because we know them all so well as old men ? A good gig for Pegg and the rest as this should be their pension plans sorted.

8.5 and a Must See

You have said roughly the same thing twice in very recent posts..? are we talking to Young, Angry and Idealist "Questions" or Old, Bitter and Cynical Questions ?.. you see that you are both halves of the same person, and, allowing for the Quantam Singularity created by the Red Matter and the possible Time Differentation caused by the subsequent Wormhole and Discontinuity in the Sub-Space Matrix you are indeed one and the same. But one is obviously pissed.. the defence, rests :smokin:

I'm not sure what you mean.

Spock created a black hole to suck in a star that was going into supernova.

This black hole sucked him in and the romulan ship. It spat the romulans out, they changed things and a new timeline was created.

The older spock is older spock from timeline alpha, meeting younger spot from timeline beta. It's about crossing over to alternate realities, so time travel paradoxes are nullified.

The Hangover - some good chuckles and Zach Galifianakis is great in it. 9 out of 10.

Sunshine Cleaning - a very sweet comedy, great performance from Emily Blunt, let down a little by the abrupt ending. 8 out of 10.

Time Crimes (aka Los Cronocrímenes) - Spanish film about a man who accidentally goes back in time a few hours and encounters himself. Which doesn't go well. Fun and very wierd at the same time. 7 out of 10.

The Hangover
There were some funny moments, and I've liked Bradley Cooper since 'Alias', but the characters weren't all that pleasant making it harder to really care about them. Decent film otherwise.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
As far as big budget, summer blockbuster, popcorn movies go, this was great. If you start to analyse or think too deeply it isn't so hot (how many characters were thrown in either for the merchandising possibilities or as pandering to fan boys making ticking boxes more important than character development). But as a piece of entertainment this was a lot of fun.

jar head is a bit disappointin reely as a bullet isn't fired in anger during the whole thing

That's the point. It's supposed to show War in Iraq was dull and frustrating if you were not on the invading front line.

Went and saw Terminator Salvation last night and a jolly good romp it was too. The plot wasn't too bad to follow, after the open ending to No.3

Lots of CGI going on and a nice texture to the DV, with some fine one-liners thrown in

The introduction of a pregant partner for John Connor introduces several plot possibilities for future episodes, which is what there will be, as Terminator Resolution is probably not on the cards ;)

Agreed Yes Man was SHIT HOUSE.

The run of dissapointing films continues.

Lakeview Terrace

This thriller was slow and fairly uninteresting. It was about a Rasist Black LA cop who harassess his next door neighbours who have just moved in, White Man and Black Woman. A twist on the usual only white people are rasists. The White Man was a fecking wet lettuce and Samuel L Jackson was pretty good as always but it lacked ay real depth.

5.1

Bedtime Stories

I tried to raise a smile at this Disney offering with Adam Sandler and Russell Brand but to be honest it was SHIT HOUSE. I am fast coming to the conclusion Sandler is SHIT HOUSE in everything he does and Brand played Brand, ie an annoying Tosser.

There was 1 amusing scene where he had to do a presentation with a sowllen tongue translated by Brand but overall it was TURD. The only redeeming thing is it had the lovely Keri Russell in it.

3.7

Its been a woeful year and with Transformers 2 by all accounts being complete and utter SHIT HOUSE its all getting me down now.

Go watch transformers 2. It's fun if you switch your brain off. Got a four star review from the respected and ultra difficult to please reviewer of, let see if I'm spelling this right... the news of the world.

Lesbian Vampire Killers - Not nearly as funny or scary or indeed sexy as it should've have been. Mild titters (pun intended) throughout. 4/10

Zack & Miri Make A Porno - A surprisingly light comedy, which is let down by it's final act where everything is resolved far too easily. 6/10

Debbie Does....er no, not really!

Year One
Michal Cera and Jack Black do their schtick well, but nothing new. Support cast of greats like Hank Azaria, Oliver Platt and David Cross come across as one note characters. Not the worst film ever, but missable.

Here and There
Taken

Liam Neeson stars as a one man war machine when his daughter away with her friend in Paris is kidnapped by a gang of Albanians and force into prostitution being drugged and sold on. Neeson gets a call from his daughter on her mobile just as she is about to be snatched. He gets on the first flight from the USA to Paris pronto and sets about tracking down the gangs and rescuing her.

Suffice to say there is loads of acton and Liam manages to kill at least 50 people on his own with a tour de force of brutal retribution. There are some stand out fight scenes, car chases and a eye watering torture scene.

Neeson at 56 is one Cool dude and shows the older man can still hack it.

This has been a suprise huge hit in the USA taking $ 78 000 000 in 3 weeks. Neeson is back on the map , big style.

Well worth a look for a cracking throw away action movie evening. Check it out.

7.9

Just got around to seeing this film yesteday on the 'harder cut' DVD. Not sure what the original cut was like so difficult to compare.

Anyway, thought this film was a popcornfest, once it gets going after the first 10 mins that's it, I was hooked. Very entertaining, brainless but brilliant.

Bourne Identity meets Man on Fire meets Get Carter
