Stokes putting the pressure on the field... looking much more positive than some of the earlier batters.

Westley riding his luck... chasing a short and wide one from Olivier outside off... at least he slashed hard and it flew over the slips for 4... fortunate and a rather surprising shot just before lunch.

This is what's known as a 'Westlife'.

63.5

Olivier to Root, 1 run, worked off the pads down to long leg and that's fifty...the 10th Test in a row he has made at least a half-century which equals John Edrich's England record

Yes, he's out - smashing into leg stump... England 187-5 (67.1 overs)

Big wicket for SA... pressure on Bairstow, Ali et al to get this up to something respectable... and a new ball due before the close.

Huge shout... not given... and reviewed... and now the umpire has given it out caught.... but they are still reviewing it...

Bairstow gone.... or is he... was it a fair catch??

Drinks, in the evening session, Day One

England 200-5 (72 overs), Stokes 32* , Bairstow 4*

Another late finish beckons... SA over rate seems to have ground to a halt this afternoon.

Although the weather at The Oval that year halted the Aussie response to our first innings total and precipitated a collapse. Can't believe how they caved in once Hoggard stepped up after the covers came off. England also retained the Ashes at Old Trafford in 2013- thanks to the weather after lunch on the last day..

BensGrandad Old Trafford is the worst, by some stretch, for weather. But there tend to be results.

Since 2000 there have been 12 Tests. 9 yielded results. England haven't lost there since 2001.

That could change in the next few days unless our bowlers rescue us again!

We need a better no 2 & 3 for sure!

Pivotal half hour in the series for South Africa. I feel they need to bag a wicket tonight, whereas England will feel OK at 250-5 with these two at the crease in the morning.
