My brother did a plumbing course at a Worthing college two years ago.
He did an intensive course, never missed a lesson over 12 months and finish top of his class. The last part was to work with a plumber so that he could be tested. He contacted plumbers from Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey and London. He contacted every plumber in the yellow pages volunteering to work for nothing, only to get the experience so that an inspector could be called to check his work so he could complete the no-corgi part of his city and guilds.
He did have about 3 replies. He was at this time 38.
He wasted a lot of money he couldn't afford. Lets hope if you do this course the same doesn't happen to you (Apologies have not read all the posts).

That doesnt sound good at all! I am hoping that i will be able to find a course that ensures a job at the end of it. I was under the impression that there is a massive demand for tradesmen.

What does a laser engineer do? I might want in.

It's cnc machining basically, I work in a factory running lasers to cut components out of sheet metal.

Interesting stuff, to me anyway, some jobs are good, intricate little bits of stainless steel, or some are bloody heavy like stringers for staircases out of 12mm mild steel that weigh a ton and just moving them about is a job in itself.

It can be repetitive, but I enjoy it, and the lads I work with are brilliant, I much prefer this environment to office work, we can shout, stamp and swear without being dragged in to a disciplinary hearing!

I work here...... Cirrus Laser

have a butchers, but we are a very specialised industry and there isn't many of us companies operating, it helps we have the latest, cutting edge machines....

Sorry to hijack Bennys thread:blush:

To be honest i don't think any job will make me happy! But as long as the pay is good and there is some banter, and its not too strenuous then im sure i will cope!

Wait till your on site in the dead of winter knocking up some new builds and everyone is freezing waiting for you to get the heating system installed and working to get warm. You will have some banter flying your way then.

Good luck on changing career though it's never too late. Just make sure you do your homework wherever you decide to do an apprenticeship.

One step at a time eh ;)

Im not scared of hard graft, nor am i scared of shit (I currently wipe bums for a living)

I just want a job that pays well, and that has more sociable hours. I currently give up at least 2 nights a week to sleep in a supported living home!

My advice is try and study through a College as opposed to a private provider. Most Colleges offer the new C & G 6035 Level 2 Plumbing over 36 weeks, during your study you could look out for a job to complete your nvq. DM your number if you want any more info and I will bell you tomoz. For info, I teach plumbing at a College in London :)

City College offer loads of apprenticeships, I just bagged myself an Accountancy apprenticeship with day release fully funded, and I'm paid £12,000 a year for my first year. Check apprenticeships out.

From what I've been doing so far, it's not all what everyone makes it out to be. But my office is probably the most relaxed ever, and is not redundant of Albion fans either. Friday's pub time is well worth the wait. Definitely enquire ASAP, as you could enrol soon.

Hmmmm interesting! I dont see myself as a brick layer particularly, perhaps the thought of lugging shit loads of bricks up a ladder puts me off! But perhaps plastering could be a good one! Roofing is a no go for me, im shit with heights!

Stick to your guns Carpentry plumbing and electrician are the 3 top paid trades in construction, you can also move on in to managementfrom these trades should you choose Bricklaying plastering and roofing are quite frankly very hard work and after a while boring.have you also thought about a setting out engineers course.

Funnily enough I work as a support worker now. A work mate left the job last year to retrain as a plumber having spent well over 10 years in the nursing/caring profession. He also wanted the move for the money, and luckily he had a plumber as a mate who he could work with as an apprentice. He's in his early 30's, so at your age you've no worries - go for it !

Double coincidence is that after leaving school I started as a labourer then went hod carrying and put myself through day release as a bricklayer. I hated bricklaying and preferred hod carrying to be honest, but it was only ever for the money and years down the line I only have a ruined back to show for doing over 10 years on the hod. As a bricklayer you won't be carrying bricks up ladders, the hod carriers will be doing all the bumping out for you, but it still isn't any good for your back and it's boring as anything if you're doing site work and just chucking up corners then running the line in all day long. My advice is if you're going into the building trades go for the easy on the body options of plumber or electrician. I'd avoid the wet trades if I were you.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck. Always remember that job satisfaction is worth shits loads more than any money you can ever earn.

Very wise words there are so many people I know who cannot stand their job, personally I enjoy mine immensely and find it very challenging and it pays pretty well in my view.
