A friend of mine passed his driving test today and were trying to get him car Insurance. He is 17 years old and driving a Citroen Saxo 1.1. We realise it will be expensive but currently struggling to find it cheaper than £2,000!!!

Wondered if anybody has ever looked for anything similar and could suggest any places to try??

Many thanks.....SB005!!!

I had to pay £1600 when I passed at 18 a few years ago and was driving a 1.4l Ford Escort. Think I was with Swinton. Can't say i'm surprised it's that much to be honest!!

You certainly won't get it any cheaper than 15 hundred.

You could always go on someone else's insurance, but then you dont build up a no claims.

Try adding on a parent as a NAMED driver [not as policy holder] and go 3rd party fire+theft if car is not worth much

Ridiculous. I'm 17 and have a 1.4 and pay £2400 a year. Ouch. Luckily it will come down after a year, when I'm 18 and have no claims.

A lot of companies (not all, but a lot) will give 1 years' no claims for anyone with pass plus. It may be worth investigating. For me it was a money saver, but it won't be for everybody.

I went with pearl when I had my Renault 5 after passing my test.

Renault 5's still are officially (not officially) the best car ever made... what is not to like with this beast?

Also Admiral do 10 months for a years NCB which can save a bit and help you build up quicker

Are we talking fully comp insurance? If so, buy a banger and drive that for 2/3 years on TP only cover and that will keep the cost down whilst you build up a no-claims discount (assuming you don't have any accidents). If you are worried about your street cred then that's the price you pay. Be surprised if the prices quoted are TP only.

and the winner was a company called 'A Plan'. Managed to get it for under £2,000, third party F&T. Thanks for ur suggestions.

A company I would suggest AVOIDING is 'Adrian Flux'. They quoted him £1,600 when it was a provisonal license and told him that it would not changed when he passed his test but other companies would. When he rung them today, it had gone up to over £3,000!!

They said they had made a mistake......

Still think its so expensive though!!!

A company I would suggest AVOIDING is 'Adrian Flux'.

Very true ! My girlfriend was insured with them and had to claim for her windscreen. Her policy said £50 excess but they insisted it should be £90 and wouldn't get the work done until she paid it. Took months to get the difference back. It was fitted by Autoglass and they didn't seal it properly and it started to mist up. Adrian Flux refused to deal with it and said she would have to make a comlpaint to Autoglass herself despite the fact she had no choice who THEY sent out to do the original repair.

Avoid like the plague !

The sad truth is that a 17 year old bloke is something like 90% likely to have an accident in his first year of motoring.
(me, 46, group 17 Saab, 200BHP, around £1/HP - it gets easier)
