I voted 'remain', I still don't think to leave is the right decision, but that's all water under the bridge and irrelevant as is the continuation of whining in 'defeat' and crowing in 'victory' which should both cease, as that's rather pointless now.

As the PM says - Brexit means Brexit, and we are going to make a success of it - We are all Brexiteers now.

We bide our time until WE are ready, then WE invoke Article 50 and leave the EU in an orderly, cordial and cooperative manner in the best interests of all concerned.

Sounds like a good plan.

I've never really understood this whining & whingeing charge. There's a debate occurring. People from both sides having discussions. Get over it. No one's bleating. It's most likely that Brexit will happen but a change of direction is not impossible and those of us with our backs against the wall are going to keep on having a right old go. Eyeballing almost inevitable defeat is an old British tradition after all, terrifically popular in our country's history. It's an old Albion tradition too. In the mid-90s David Bellotti imperiously demanded that those of us resisting his board's steamroller plans stop whining. Fortunately, we didn't. Whining was the wrong word then and it's the wrong word now. Let those with the odds on their side accuse us of what they want - I for one will argue on.

If you want to check yourself click on the number of replies next to the the thread title on the main page and you can see the whole list in all its glory with you sitting at number 13. Only editing I did was to add the leave and stay and I've been following this thread long enough to know exactly where the top 16 sit.

I take your point. There has been some whining in 'defeat' and crowing at 'victory' though over this, coupled with the accusations made of doing so and other things that have been said and it has negated it as a debate and turned it into in exercise in some people insulting each other at times.

Not at all? Apparently we are all brexiteers as we a leave vote. Analogous is we are all now conservatives as we had a tory election vote. Just pointing out the former is ludicrous as the latter would be.

Faversham wine lake, actually. I should probably stay off this particular thread since, to be fair, I am very not part of the hand wringing tendency. But it does strike me as extraordinary, this turn of events. I was listening to someone on R5 the other morning, on a phone-in, emoting that Brexit is Brexit and we should just Brexit now, no negociations, nothing. Just . . . . gone. I understand her imperative but, blimey . . . . 'so what about the replacement of current trade deals that are enshirined in our EU membership?'. 'I don't care about that!'. But what about the fact that a huge chunk of our immigration is from outside the EU and'.... 'Brexit is Brexit'. Could we, actually, just leave tomorrow and work out all the deals later? My head says 'no' but my heart says 'Brexit IS BREXIT!!!!'. And I voted REMAIN! In times of madness he who blinks last wins.

they will only be handled by the commission upto a point, assuming everything is agreeable to all members. once the negotiations stray into areas that raises objections from individual countries, they could veto so they need to agree. if there is treaty changes required all members will need to ratify. in short, if one of the major countries simple doesnt want deal type x, then it wont go ahead, so it may be prudent to ensure they support deal type x.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding but are you referring to some sort subsequent "trade" type arrangement/deal here?

Article 50 is about EU withdrawal, pure and simple; ie how the leaving member state and the EU disengage from each other, hopefully via an agreed Withdrawal Treaty, and the requirements from an EU standpoint seem pretty clear (to me anyway).
The Council has to agree, by consensus, the guidelines for an agreement with the leaving member state, so the head of state in every EU country (excl UK) has a veto. The Commission are then responsible for negotiating a Withdrawal Treaty with the departing MS and, assuming one is successfully concluded it then has to be approved by the Council (QM voting - ie x15 members states representing 65%+ of population) and the European Parliament (simple majority). As I said previously, the Council has already done this and their position is due to be ratified at the Bratislava summit next month; the Commission's head negotiator has been appointed and is due in post next month; the Council's representative is Didier Suuews although his team's primary role will be in the negotiation of any EU/UK post-Brexit arrangements, should the UK decide it wants something more than the basic WTO rules.
Fair enough about any Treaty change requiring ratification by every member state; however, every state has a veto (regardless of size) and Article 50 does not allow for a Withdrawal Treaty to amend an EU Treaty.
