5. Interpol - El Pintor - a band recognising their strengths and playing to them
4. Thomas Azier - Hylas - simple synth pop done perfectly. not a wasted second.
3. TRUST - Joyland - haven't heard another artist doing quite what this very, very young Canadian is doing
2. Douglas Dare - Whelm -...
They're a funny one for me, R.E.M..
So much of their music can wash over me, or sounds R.E.M. by numbers, but the odd song will just FLOOR me with it's brilliance.
I just think it's an incredibly exciting area of music at the moment. I wouldn't call it a genre, as there's far far far too many sub genres and variations within.
I know that. I do have interest in a very wide range of music, but for whatever reason I've recently gone off guitar music generally in quite a big way. This wasn't a conscious decision, maybe I've just burned out after years of listening predominantly to guitar based stuff.
It's almost like we're mates or something isn't it?
99% might be an exaggeration. If they weren't my mates I probably wouldn't be as big a fan, but that's completely logical. I am big on Queens of the Stoneage though, and used to love Muse, so I would still be a fan.
I was "evangelical" about...
Maybe I'll swing back that way at some point. Right now I just love the sheer depth and variety of sounds you can get from electronic music, I also love epic film soundtracks and just anything that's wholly immersive.
We clearly want different things and look for different things when it comes to music. The imagery on some of JJ's stuff is fantastic but musically and melodically she is miles behind iamamiwhoami for me. Really obvious chord progressions and nothing interesting vocally for me, while Jonna Lee...
Driving late at night/in the dark is PHENOMENAL for electro with good bass. I also like to do a bit of sci fi writing (just a hobby) on the side and again this sort of dark atmospheric electro is perfecto for that.
Diff'rent strokes, eh? I can't get enough of it. Also a CHVRCHES fan, though I think there's much more melodic depth to iamami... whereas CHVRCHES are a bit more what you see is what you get.
This song, for example, I think is utter wonky genius.

Still lost in a world of dark synth pop
Thomas Azier - Hylas - the most straight up pop record on this list, sounds a fair bit like early Depeche mode

Trust - Joyland (also his first album TRST is superb, takes all the horrible sounds of 90s house/techno and repurposes them...
You're not having a disagreement with me - I like Temples' album. I was solely referring to both bands live. RB have a FAR wider range of dynamics, light and shade etc live than Temples did. RB demanded that people pay attention, if they'd stayed at 11 (arf arf) all set then people would've...
Actually found them incredibly boring live, but then they were coming on after Royal Blood and before Interpol, and most bands would sound a bit dull and lifeless after RB. This isn't even a bumlick, RB do have phenomenal dynamics live, regardless of what people think of the songs/style.
I like...
Still all about Trust - Joyland for me. Stunning dark electro, taking some pretty horrible 90s techno sounds and doing wonderful things with them.

I'm a ridiculous Interpol fanboy and love even their 3rd and 4th, with all their massive flaws. The new album DOES evoke the mood of the first 2 and is worth a listen...
