It appears that this most tragic episode has now been hijacked by the usual suspects, not only the vigil on Saturday evening but also the same old posters on here. Shame on the lot of you.

We are all having a perfectly reasonable discussion without name calling or swearing. As the topic is deserving of.

Reading this thread hardly anyone got the point of the vigil? Confusing statistical facts of males more likely to get attacked on the streets with the unwanted sexual harassment women receive on a daily basis

To be honest, I'm struggling with how the 'left' is handling many of our social issues right now and I say this as someone of the left, in no way centrist dad. 'We' seem to be wanting to stifle debate, will not countenance debate even from those that are broadly supportive of whichever issue driving people in to binary positions.

I don't know if we even have a left or right nowadays. We have a Labour Party that despises the working class and a Conservative Party that doesn't want to conserve anything.

I'm the first generation of my paternal family that didn't work in a pit (albeit as engineers not miners) in the North-East. My dad switched jobs to work in a factory as an engineer in Surrey. My mum's side were skilled labour and staunch Labour supporters. And if it was a few decades back, I would be too. Now I wouldn't touch either party with a bargepole.

John Pilger tweeted this recently:

Not sure I'd entirely agree but it's food for thought.

University radicals were never that welcome in the Labour movement, but they seem to be in control of large chunks of it now. And oddly, the Tories seem to be quite comfortable with that. I'm basing this on actions, not on words. They'll sabre-rattle every now and again, but then do bugger all about it.

I think most people get the point of it, people are questioning

Why the organisers know better than the family who didn’t want it
Why the Police acted the way they did
How we have ended up in the position where protesting/vigils are banned
Why are some protests/vigils ok to have whilst the rest of us are legally limited to meeting 1 person outside
The Hypercritical nature of people saying certain protests should be allowed

where does it all stop.

the question about women walking at night with headphones one is curious.

I've known a couple of male friends been whacked from behind when doing this on way home from pubs. Along with numerous incidents of blokes on blokes trouble due various nonsense. We need to be carful here as like you say its all becoming diluted and a bit embarrassing now.

Look at the police in other countries , look at the issues in other countries. We have it so good over here for everyone really.

Social media gives a voice for the permanently outraged though.

The right wing press have given s voice to the " outraged" for years. Now social media gives a voice to minorities it's an issue

But was the vigil about that?

Because catcalling is obnoxious and boorish but hardly in the same league as what happened to the unfortunate victim here. I'm not even sure there's much of a link.

It's clearly toxic I understand, but the MET have dealt badly with it. We are in the middle of a culture war anyway and the organisation lacks the nuance and intelligence to deal with it. I'm not anti Police at all, but have lived up here long enough to witness enough occurrences when they have failed when the shit hits the fan. I have spoken to Sussex Police who agree they are of a different breed.

After the Villa game where we failed to win the title I was chatting to a copper from Shropshire in the coach park after. I remarked that the coppers on duty were very friendly. And he said "compared to where?". I said "The Met mostly". The copper chuckled and said "Nobody likes the Met". Seems to be a theme here.

Also where’s the half million pounds raised in the victim’s name going? The body taking the money isn’t a registered charity.

Son of an engineer from Surrey....I’d call that posh.

More videos like this are coming out, can you blame the police for arresting her? Taking her mask down and shouting in his face whilst he remains calm.

Far too easy to blame the police completely here.

Bang on the money , I noticed there was a similar vigil in Brighton one arrest and a few fixed penalties dished out , following day there were a few people demonstrating outside John St Police station
The usual types

Has also wilfully failed to ban two absolutely blatant Palace posters on here masquerading as BHA Falmer Wizard and This is me, both who have been flagged up to him, because ‘he feels’ they might just be negative Albion fans, going against his own to effectively facilitate their continued involvement on here. What is the point of having mods on here? Even the blindest person could take one look at their posting history and style to know they’re Palace.

This is me is being dealt with directly by Bozza and you are completely wrong about them. How about you get back on topic and stop derailing a thread about the tragic death of a poor woman?

It’s not pro lockdown at all. It’s entirely the opposite. We’re approaching the end of this one and I do not want another nationwide lockdown.

I don’t want to covid to spread, i don’t want more people to die. I want everyone’s lives to go back to normal. To go to weddings and funerals, to have jobs to go back to and for our economy to recover. This is in all of interests.

That’s why it’s vital people play their part and respect lockdown and social distancing. We’re almost there, let’s not jeopardise it now.

ok mate , if you have grasped it to that extent then fair play ..........i'll just carry the **** on .....regardless...

Why weren't women asking for men to be on curfew and holding vigils for Keeley Bunker, Michelle Samaraweera, Saman Mir Sacharvi and Vian Mangrio?

Missing white woman syndrome is a term used by social scientists[1][2][3] and media commentators to refer to extensive media coverage, especially in television,[4] of missing person cases involving young, white, upper-middle-class women or girls. The term is used to describe the Western media's[citation needed] disproportionate focus on upper-middle-class white women who disappear, compared to coverage of missing women of color, women of lower social classes and missing men or boys.[5][6] Although the term was coined in the context of missing person cases, it is sometimes used of coverage of other violent crimes. Instances have been cited in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa.[7]

PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill is said to be the originator of the phrase.[6] Charlton McIlwain defines the syndrome as white women occupying "a privileged role as violent crime victims in news media reporting", and concludes that missing white woman syndrome functions as a type of racial hierarchy in the cultural imagery of the West.[8] Eduardo Bonilla-Silva categorizes the racial component of missing white woman syndrome as a form of racial grammar, through which white supremacy is normalized by implicit or even invisible standards.[1]

Missing white woman syndrome has led to a number of right-wing tough on crime measures that were named for white women who disappeared and were subsequently found harmed.[9][10] In addition to race and class, factors such as supposed attractiveness, body size and youthfulness function as unfair criteria in the determination of newsworthiness in coverage of missing women.[11] News coverage of missing black women was more likely to focus on the victim's problems, such as abusive boyfriends or a troubled past, while coverage of white women tends to focus on their roles as mothers or daughters.[12]

Not a sniff from anyone about young women being raped by grooming gangs though

Could we keep the thread abuse free and on topic, do we really want this being thrown to the bears to turn into some agenda fuelled embarrassment?

Can’t believe a thread about a young woman being kidnapped and killed in some unspeakable fashion has somehow descended in the usual suspects playing post tennis for no other reason than they dislike the other person.
