Is Lewis Dunk better than Mark Lawrenson?

I wasn't lucky enough to see Lawro in the stripes first hand, but I have heard stories of his mazy runs and ariel dominance. Is Dunk in the same league? And if so, could he be better? He is just unbelievable in the air, can put a 70 yard diagonal pass on a pinhead, likes the occasional surge forward and scores goals..

I'm a JCL who's first game was in '96 (aged 9!) and I haven't seen anyone as good.

Completely different types of centre halves , Lawrenson was a ball playing centre half who brought the ball out of defence , Dunk is physically stronger and better in the air , but both really good players , although Dunk has not reached the level of Lawrenson yet

Mr Nomad.... I hoped you have watched both as many years as I have. Your Lewis D defo has more potential and we will not be able to hang on to his coat-tails. He's destined to reach for the stars

I do not see him being a Lawrenson, based on my own opinion that I think Lawro is one of the greatest centre backs ever to grace English football.

Lawrenson was a gazelle amongst buffalo. He had time and space when others around him were panicking. He could also play in central midfield. Dunk is a classic centre half who is a great stopper, but I would not put him in the Lawrenson class.

He was absolutely fabulous and cos' he was Albion, I adored him him (he's not always been that kind to us in his punditry job). It's just that I see the vast potential in Dunkie... he is a bit head strong and picks up yellows galore but he is silk and velvet and makes us all purr!

Dunk has potential but he's not played in the top division yet, Lawrenson performed week in, week out against the best in the country.

Yes, but mate, we all saw the potential in Lawro back at the time, and he proved he had it. His future away from us proved it.

At this moment in time in Dunkys development i think Lawro is the better. However watching Dunks progress particularly this and last season I think he has every possibility of being the better of the two.

1) He never made a mistake playing for Brighton
2) ML was quicker so he would not be caught out by Oliver Burke, Hogan etc.

Factor in favour of Dunk

3) Fractionally better header of the ball

I do, however, believe, Dunky will go on to represent his country. Whether with us is to be seen. But if he did represent England whilst playing for us, and if he did shine, he'd be picked up by one of the top six. Sadly he ain't gonna be our John Terry or Jamie Carragher and be a one club man, we are just not big enough for such players. BBC Sussex said we turned down 12 mill for him last summer, which is staggering. Enjoy him while we've got him.

what age was Lawro when we bought him? just wondering if he had more experience when we had him than what we are comparing Dunk with?

dunky certainly has made mistakes, that's all part of learning his trade, its good to see the lessening events of red mist descending on him.

We always used to say that Lawro was worth the admission money alone. Not sure I would say that about Dunky just yet. Different players, of course, with Lawro taking off upfield with those mazy runs. Very rarely an end product as I recall but wonderful to watch as defenders looked at each other and wondered who was supposed to pick him up!

Lawro never thru his body in front of shots like LD. 'Lawro never made a mistake'...boy that's just not true.... my memory may not be able to be backed up by SKY film but Mark certainly had his off moments. I still think he was goose-bumppery-good and he was head and shoulders above the rest of our boys.... but look on.... Lewis may just usurp his throne

Wolves in the League Cup, we lost 2-3. Best goal I ever saw at the Goldstone. Mazy run from our 18 at the south end to the 18 at the north end and shot... goal! It was just unbelievable.

I was going to say 19 but thought nah. Back in the day the squad used to come to the Old Forge in East Preston for Christmas, or it could have been end of season, and I remember thinking how young he was when we were stood outside thinking how lucky we were having the squad in EP. They'd come out and ride our bikes (pissed), chuck us some cake (literally) and generally act like teenagers!
