I thought the border went through Southwick?
The border is the divide between Southwick in West Sussex and Portslade (Brighton and Hove) in East Sussex. There are no parts of Brighton and Hove in West Sussex.

No it's part of Adur District Council which is West Sussex - always has been.

A suburb is an outlying district of a city. Southwick is described as a suburb of Brighton and Hove on Wiki?
So is Shoreham a suburb of Brighton and Hove as is Peacehaven but neither are included in the Unitary Authority of Brighton and Hove.

Shoreham is not described as a suburb of Brighton and Hove. According to Wiki: The town lies in the middle of the ribbon of urban development along the English south coast between the city of Brighton and Hove and the town of Worthing.
Also, Shoreham's post town comes under Shoreham by sea, unlike Southwick which comes under Brighton.

You seem to be mixing up a lot of elements.
I've always thought of the Brighton urban area as between the River Ouse and the River Adur ie Newhaven to Shoreham - it's one continuous and indeed contiguous built-up area. However there is a County boundary which runs through this urban development as I've previously described.
What the post codes have to do with county boundaries - I think you're a little mixed up.

There IS no boundary; no East, no West, no City of Brighton and Hove; it's ALL Sussex! Our cricket fans (I'm a Sussex Member) support Sussex. Men from all over our county fought and died together in the Royal Sussex Regt. and we all sing Sussex by the Sea! I will not denigrate any part of this wonderful place. Whenever I re-enter Sussex from travelling elsewhere, I don't care if it's "east" or "west", I always think "ah, back to civilisation" and will sing GOSBTS (much to my wife's long-suffering annoyance!). For me, the whole county feels like "home". You may tell them all that we stand or fall for SUSSEX by the Sea!

You're confusing Post codes with Post towns. Southwick's Post town is Brighton. Shorehams's isn't.

What do post towns have to do with county boundaries? The village of Frant in East Sussex, has it's post town as Tunbridge Wells in Kent.
But Post Towns do not relate to administrative boundaries.
There are approximately 1,500 post towns which are organised by Royal Mail subject to its policy only to impose changes where it has a proven, economic and practical benefit to the organisation, covering its own cost. Each post town usually corresponds to one or more postal districts (the first part of the postcode) therefore each post town can cover an area comprising many towns, urban districts and villages. Post towns rarely correspond exactly to administrative boundaries and their associated physical features. As such they often group a small minority of neighbourhoods, streets or houses together with a main settlement in a different county, area of local government or administration (including healthcare trust), constituency, European statistical region and/or traditional parish. This was a main reason why postal counties were abolished (but not prohibited) in 1996.
