What will cost us this season...

Until January at at the earliest we will score less than we did in the 2nd half of the last season. Given our strength in defence we will concede less also, so I can see a fair number of 1-0 wins (hopefully!)

I could've sworn we've had two 3-0 wins already this season in the league.

What will cost us this season is miserable *******s on here that are more interested in players that we don't have rather than players that we do have.
Newcastle who are everybody's favourites to win the league having spent £50m on new players have lost 3 of their first 8 games
Including 2 at home.

We will need a January signing of knockaert proportions to challenge for top two.
He single handedly saved our season last time.
Unfortunately signings that come off that big, for small money, don't come around often.

The club have called our bluff and i saw this the first time by tugging on our nostalgia strings. Firstly they bring in Zamora (Freebie)I'm not calling it a bad thing but the club didn't have to spend out. This season it's Murray (freebie Loan). Sure he was a good player and knows where the back of the net is but don't fit into our current setup. Both i might add we're and are freebies. I said this earlier on the post that the club have called our bluff and used that not to spend any money to get a striker in.

Our lack of ambition in the transfer window cost us last session and it will be same again this season.

Our recent history of signing strikers does not inspire optimism. We are, perhaps understandably, not prepared to pay over the odds whereas many of our competitors are. Unless TB is prepared to take a punt I can't see the situation changing anytime soon.

There really is a lot of negativity on here about the club that everyone supports.

Brighton fans got the ride of their lives last year. We are up there challenging again this year and we are getting all of our injured players back to full fitness and some people seem to be able to see into a crystal ball in that we won't be successful this year. This being so then why even play the games on Saturday and Tuesday ? Lets just look at the teamsheet and the score that wins the score predictor thread, lets just allocate those scores each week.

No point in going out and wasting energy on 90 minutes of football. No point in meeting your mates for a beer before the match. No point in having a nice stadium. No point in football because some people seem to be able to predict what will happen.

Well I say that's all a load of shite. Very few on here could have predicted what would happen last year to Brighton and the same applies this year because football is not played on paper. Enjoy what is at present very good times because surely you haven't forgotten how bad it can be and was just 2 or 3 years ago

I really don't like this post.
It has the patronizing aura of 'run along little people and be grateful'.

The negativity across the board, and obviously on this thread, stems from 1 simple fact:-

The squad doesn't have enough firepower to challenge in this division.

We love our Chairman.
We love our manager.
Those that don't love the GM probably have a begrudging respect.
We love our stadium.
We love the rest of our squad.

From the outside looking in we have an understanding of the financial pressures Tony has placed on himself for the club.
We get the fact that is concentrated on the most expensive position to fill.

But that doesn't mean we can't be disappointed by a team that has so far turned in, at best, a mix bag of results.
Those results, I'm sure we all agree, would be more positive had the one striker position been filled.

None of this effects our support of the team and club.
We all hope we are wrong, we all support the team, but many of us are concerned that January is a long way off and lot of points away.

Oh and finally I don't think we're being unrealistic in our desire for this key player.
After all the owner, at the end of last season, did say words to the effect of 'well that's not happening again, top 2 next season'.
Which I struggled to see as a veiled nod to 'we're going to break the bank on a centre back'.

Backed up by quotes like this as late as the 30th August.
They hardly come across as 'we don't need a striker'.

Hughton said it on Talk Sport last night at 8.30, in interviews with the Argus on Saturday, in interviews with BBC Sussex on Saturday.

They are going to sign a striker.

This doesn't mean, to be clear, they are not going to sign a striker.

I still think there will be a striker brought in. The one I thought it might be hasn't raised it's head yet so I am starting to think that one might not be going to happen.

Nailed it.

The club FAILED to sign the striker we so obviously need in the summer. Until that squad gap is closed, we will surely be looking at top 6 at best...

It's a game of opinions but I didn't take the post that way at all. My interpretation is he is saying that the need for this mythical striker is being presented as a fact and then the conclusion is being drawn that the failure to sign said player means we will fail. I agree with the poster that this seems like a rather extreme view and the associated level of misery stems from the absolute certainty that we must have this player. Your post does rather bear that out.
As NooBHA said, very few people could have predicted the success of last season so where does this certainty come from ? If people aren't as certain as they claim on here then perhaps they should lay off the doom and gloom ?

Fair enough, maybe my opening gambit was a little harsh, and perhaps many of us are being extreme, as to my knowledge, nobody here is called Doris.

This is a debate that should be had at the end of November.
But expecting rational thinking on a t'internet message board is as likely as the Albion being top then.

How many times have we played our 1st choice 11 this season? Twice? Everyone needs to relax a bit. We scored loads of goals last year and we will get back into our groove this year.

Our record of strikers isn't great, I agree to an extent. Most clubs only have 1 top striker that regularly delivers and in the last 2.5 seasons we've had Ulloa (23 in 50) and Hemed (20 in 50). That isn't that bad in my book.

Murray is far from a freebie. I seem to recall most of Nsc were screaming for him on loan last season.
The club have said that they tried to get strikers in, but the club faced the same situation as we did with Stephens. We held onto him, as the club who had the striker we wanted held onto him.

So either we believe the club, or the club is lying, from the chairman down to the manager.

There is the financial aspect too.

The club probably wouldn't have held onto Stephen's had Burnley wanted him as much as they wanted the midfielders they bought for 8 & 10m (I think).

Everybody has a price.
I'm sure the club has been chasing numerous strikers, it's just a shame the market was so 'over heated'.

Or that Norwich jumped in on the Pritchard deal. It seems the money was there.

As things stand and the way the league is this year then top 6 is success this season.

This will also require a bit of luck with injuries .

If we can stay nearish the mix and then spend up in Jan then who knows but realityis top 6 would be a huge success

I fear the striker market in the summer was an iceberg compared to how extra 'over heated' it will be in January.

Is anyone at the club denying that they were in the hunt for a striker?

It looks as if deals were close to being agreed and then the Albion were gazumped or the terms of the selling/loaning club were changed.

Seems like a lot of fans are frustrated with the play offs after 3 failures and want more. Expectation is unrealistically based on us improving last season, hence so much whinging about results so far.

We were spoilt a bit. No harm in aiming for top 6 but the club would do better to set expectation in my opinion.
