A cheeky 30 minutes tomorrow to drag the Pakistanis out for another session of fielding, get a 350 lead and if you can't bowl them out in the next 80 overs then you don't deserve to win...

England 388-5, leading by 285

Pakistan will now need a record Edgbaston chase... the current highest 283 by South Africa in 2008

Already out of reach barring something truly exceptional, but Cookie won't declare until after an hour in the morning at least.

I would like to see us have an hour at them before lunch and perhaps take a couple of wickets. Tell the batsmen to throw the bat to go for it for 45 mins to an hour. and if you score some runs great if not no prroblem. it will be too many for them to chase.

Close of play, day four

England 414-5 (125 overs)

Jonny Bairstow 82*(124) Moeen Ali 60*(84)

Leading by 311 runs. A few overs in the morning, and Pakistan will be facing a tricky session with the new ball, but England have shown it is still a very decent wicket to bat on, 90 overs 294 runs 5 wickets in the day today.

Why would we make this about a personal milestone when we're trying to win a test?

Absolutely. Cook will decide how many more he wants, when we've got them he'll call them in, as he should. Bairstow will get there in 30 mins anyway if he doesn't get out though I reckon.

Was it Hick that was left on 99 by a declaration once ?

If Cook tells them to throw the bat for an hour he may well reach his century.
Maybe he'll make it anyway, but chucky was suggesting we put them in once he has it, which is not the point.

What nobody's mentioned is the second new ball. That might make the difference at the end of the match but unless we declare after 5 overs tomorrow that won't be a factor.

Cook will bat on for at least 45 minutes though.

Bit of a thrash for half an hour or so in the morning, then get stuck into their batters.

Was mooted on TMS by Ed Smith that if we bat for 5 overs in morning and declare we will get enough overs against Pakistan for 2 new balls. Admittedly we only get 5 overs with the second new ball but it might just be the way to go.

People rarely discuss that batting a little longer can actually make you more attacking. It sounds like a contradiction but bear with me.

If we declare overnight and pakistan make a good chance then cook will start to push the field back because scoring just over 300 in a day is not that hard in the modern game. Imagine a big drive sees an edge and the ball goes through third slip at a catchable height to be picked up for a single at third man. If we declare now this could happen quite early but if we attack for one hour to score 70 runs then we can keep the catchers in because the runs are less important.

Personally I reckon that Pakistan are very skittleable which is not a word but you know what I mean.

We will bat longer than is necessary, Cook won't gamble it's not in his nature.
