No one really knows what went on, injury, illness, lazy whatever. If Hughton did want Wilson back I'd be happy as he showed glimpses but I am not overly fussed.

Yeah, lets lose someone who works hard, causes defenders problems and looks fit every game for the exact opposite. Good management.

Wilson got 5 goals for us last season. That's double Baldock's tally. And he featured in less games.
That's tantamount to saying you'd have JFC over Vicente.
Plus Baldock's injury record is not as you claim.

I'd have Wilson on his death bed over Baldock any day.

Wow! You want a striker who scores goals!? How unreasonable of you...

How did Baldock score 2.5 goals ???

In seriousness, Baldock was a regular starter in the team which produced the best season in 30 odd years. Yes his personal goal scoring record was not what is should have been, but anyone claiming he didn't work harder that Wilson every game is kidding themselves. Undoubtedly talented, but swapping him in for Baldock (as was suggested in this scenario) would be madness.

If he had scored a respectable, normal level of goals for a good championship striker we'd have been promoted at a canter. Everyone loves someone who grafts and works but that's not enough, I think people stuck up for CMS for far too long because he also worked hard.

I agree with most of what you say, but...

Sam B's primary job is to score goals, and he doesn't do that regularly enough. He should be cover / bench at best. We MUST sign a striker to replace him as 1st choice if we are serious about promotion this season.

I completely agree that we need someone better than Baldock, that does stick a plenty in the onion bag - I'm just saying, that ain't Wilson.

Again, if the club think that Wilson is what we need this season and he comes here, then it's what's best for us. I think if they do think he's what we need, he'll come back and score double figures plus for us. Something wasn't quite right last season, which was most apparent from him being sick on the pitch on multiple occasions, but he's exactly the kind of profile of player we do need, in terms of speed, clinical finishing, movement, etc.

Strikers operate in pairs. Did Mellor score as many as Wardy? Would Wardy have scored as many as he did without Mellor?

It's far too simplistic to say a striker's primary job is to score goals.

Baldock had a 20% chance of scoring in 90 minutes compared to Wilson's 30%. cf. Vokes (second striker) had 40%.

I thought Baldock was better playing wider (where we have a surfeit of wingers) and I would give him a chance to see if he can get his speed up and shoot on target. I think there is more chance of Manu learning the offside rule, although sometimes the ref was wrong.

Second striker is rather an important position, but I think Knockaert or Lualua or Manu could play there* and all are better than Wilson and Baldock. Second striker is rather an important position in 4-4-1-1, but I cant see we Murray and Hemed together won't work if we want two up front in a 4-4-2 (well I can see neither is great on the pace stakes). (*with reservations, Lualua is reluctant to run into space, Knockaert might be better elsewhere, and Manu has got the pace but we haven't seen anything else).

Signings 12 and 21, would hope to be a left-sided defender and one other?
