Uwe Hünemeier signs for Albion on a three-year deal

I watch quite a bit of Bundesliga and went to the Borussia Monchengladbach - Paderborn game last season. Paderborn lost 2-0 away at Gladbach (who went on to finish 3rd) and looked pretty solid if a little blunt up top.

Paderborn finished bottom but Hunemeier was the stand out defender throughout the season and leader at the back of a team that wasn't defensively that poor - it was the other end of the pitch that they really struggled (sound familiar?),

No idea what this means regarding Dunk but Hunemeier will definitely be starting for us whether alongside or instead of Dunk. This is a very very good signing for us. Arguably our best signing of the summer, nostalgia aside.

I'm not so sure. We are one short at CB as it is, if Dunk goes we will need at least 2.

You dont pay £1.75m for a player to sit on the bench, and i cant see Hughton dropping the captain. I would of thought we'd sign another defender either (older player on a free, or youngster like Curtis Nelson) will sign as third choice. Could be that a fee for Dunk has been agreed but we are not letting him go until we have a replacement?

Doubt we would sell Dunk to Fulham before Saturday regardless, unless some kind of 'gentleman's agreement' is involved.

Even with this signing it would be illogical to sell Dunk in this transfer window. With Greer missing most of the pre-season because of injury we don’t really know what his long term status is in this regard, or even short term for that matter.

I believe there is intent on building a squad for promotion and our signings like Kayal, Rosenior, Hemed, Bong and Zamora show this. By selling Dunk it would leave us vulnerable at the back whilst a new partnership is formed and could sabotage all the good solid work. The prize of the Prem is far more than that of £5m for Dunk.

Edit: Naylor/Argus says; "Greer, who missed part of pre-season through injury, and Rea are expected to partner each other at Southend tonight in the Capital One Cup."

Three games in a week will certainly be a test for Greer.

I think this could be the longer term replacement for Greer - whilst he's not 'old' he's beginning to wain in his performances (don't get me wrong, I still love the bloke) but if Hunemeier was captain of Paderborn then it might be that he is to replace Greer eventually and form a partnership with Dunk.

That's my hope anyway.

Update on Uwe Hunemeier. Expected to sign today, subject to medical, as replacement for Aaron Hughes, not Dunk. Fee around £1.4m. #bhafc

So what I've got from Google translation so far is that:-

he's the... "most underrated player in Germany"

And was also... 'Elf kicker of the year'

Really hope Dunky stays. At least another season to see what happens - and we give him an improved deal. IMO some of our fans are too acceptant that Dunk will go - We're a good Championship club now, we want to keep hold of our young local talented players...

I really can't see us shelling out that kind of money to fill the back-up centre-back slot.

You don't tend to rotate centre-backs around too much, as you may with other positions, as the development of a mutual understanding is key to defensive success.

And, as above, the club are never going to say "Yes, we're flogging Dunk" are they?

If it is believed that Dunk is staying, this chap could put real pressure on Greer's place in the side as dropping Dunk would be akin to putting him on the transfer market.
