Got to be the Croc in this group. Any animal that has existed for millions of years and hasn't needed to evolve is the very definition of hard.

TBH this lot are not hard
Adder- Kills little animals to eat but slithers away from a lot of things and is often mugged off my Meercats.
Grizzly bear - might be king of the woods but isn't essence it's just an efficient fisherman
Tabby Cat - lol what a nomination. Fair play. Can see this becoming the new shrimp
Wolverine - a cartoon character although one of the toughest in this group
Croc - it is a killing machine but the video of one being eaten by a snake loses a few points
Stonefish- nasty fish that can kill but is often eaten by sharks and sea snakes
Jumping jack ants - come on we hold them captive in glass houses as they make nice little nests. Nasty yes. Hard - I would say stupid
Mouse- this animal appears to be mental. If it were human it would have been sectioned.
Worm - maned after a women who cut off a mans penis. Ouch. But it's a worm after all. I would be more impressed if it had cut off a mans penis
Shark- tickle it's belly and it rolls over to die. Talk about a weak spot

It's the year of the Tardigrade.

what exactly does a GWS actually go for? it's shit scared of orcas and gets beaten up by DOLPHINS ffs! it goes for seals and some floppy haired australians....anything else?

Boats. Helicopters. Other great whites. Orcas when they are alone and not mob handed. South Africans. Yanks. Shark cages. Whales. Junk. Quints.

They eat anything and everything.

still quite a bit smaller though surely? how would it fare against, say, a FOX?
It wouldn't. It would climb the nearest tree or wall and wait until the fox, foxtrots off. Soooo hard. Tabby cat, the first genuinely embarassing entrant into this illustrious competition that I can recall. It has literally no redeeming qualities as a hard creature.

GRASSHOPPER MOUSE (Onychomys)

"What makes Onychomys special – and fiercesome -among the hordes of North America rodents is its carnivory. Actually, carnivory itself is not that unusual among rodents, particularly desert ones. While many species are adapted to specialize in seeds or plant material, most are more omnivorous, incorporating small arthropods and sometimes even carrion into their diets. It’s the level of carnivory of these little guys that is impressive. They eat almost exclusively meat – mostly insects but also scorpions, small snakes and lizards, and even other rodents!

Now, these are not animals they have found dead and consumed. Onychomys are hunters. Quite aggressive ones. They will pretty much go after anything about their size or smaller that moves (with a very few exceptions in species which have toxins that make them inedible which the mice can smell from a distance), and will attack unrelentingly until it is dead. When they are near prey they sniff to identify it and then track its scent trail, silently stalking it until they are close. Then they attack, lunging at the prey with open mouths and front paws, trying to subdue it with a killing bite. In the case of vertebrates, they often go for the back of the neck, severing the spinal cord with their teeth. With arthropods they often first try to disable whatever defense the animal has, removing the stinging tails of scorpions, for instance.

They almost never give up on prey once they’ve decided to attack, although sometimes after it is dead they may decide it’s not edible and leave it. Onychomys are of the “kill first, ask questions later” school of predation it would seem. Scientists who have studied them are often astounded at their level of aggression and their heedlessness of danger, as they attack everything from harmless crickets to other mice to the most poisonous species of scorpions in North American with the same vigor. They’ve even been known to kill kangaroo rats and cotton rats much, much larger than them in the lab (although it’s unlikely they hunt those species in the wild). In the eastern part of their range, they hunt small prairie birds."

It would claw at the nose and eyes so the fox would retreat. Most dogs back off a cat when in full fight.

I've voted grasshopper mouse btw.

This reminds me - I'm sure I heard someone watching the 'Honey Badger Don't Care' youtube video on the train back from the Amex on Saturday.

Was this YOU?

My Tabby cat KILLED a SEAGULL. With its bare paws. He also took out an entire POND of tadpoles, the owner was furious. The Tabby just walked cooly away and leapt a 7 foot fence, just to truly own the kill.

It's a shame the elephant is in the same category, obviously my vote would go Elephant but for the Tabby cat!

It's very disappointing to see the disregard that 11 people hold for this competition.

Normally I'm a big supporter of the crocodile, but I'm fairly confident he'll get enough votes to finish top four so I'm switching to on of my back ups. It was going to be the wolverine, a beast that has been criminally undervalued in the previous seven WHC competitions but I'm happy to see that it looks like its getting a ground swell of support, so no need for me to vote for him. That leaves me with a choice of the Jumping Jack Ant and the Grasshopper Mouse, both of which deserve to be genuine contenders, certainly in the group stages. I've plumped for the mouse because, well, it stalks its prey, takes on poisonous beasts, howls like a wolf and cannibalises other mice. The Jumping Jack deserves serious consideration though.
