Ashley Barnes, The Latest: Ashley Barnes Signs for Burnley *Confirmation*

If Barnes was after 10k a week I'm glad we didn't pay it. I am not one of the people that was on Ashley's case all the time, in fact, I was disappointed to see him go but bloody hell-£500000 a year? If Burnley are happy to pay him that much then it's confirmation, if any was needed, that football has gone mad when a 2nd tier player gets paid half a million. Even 5k a week is bloody good money that most 'normal' people would love to earn.

It is very good money but its only fair to be paid the same as your peers and if everyone else is on more than him then its fair to pay him the same rather than a lot less

Some of the comments on this thread (mainly Bwian's) are typical comments of shiny new stadium supporters, trying to pick holes in another club who has signed one of their players.

It seems as though we virtually signed him in the summer but the transfer fee wasn't being met. It's no slant on Brighton that Barnes felt he had to move on, maybe the questions that should be asked are.. how well did he play for us this season? Did he have a sulking session because he couldn't get his move? Did he still try for Brighton knowing that he wasn't staying?

Barnes won't be on £10,000 a week at Burnley, No Nay Never.

As for our 'ramshackled' ground, do football fans these days really bother about what material their seat is going to be? Or if there's a toilet attendant dishing out free sprays of aftershave?

The Cricket Field Stand where the away fans are housed is dated and a bit manky (it's been there since 1969) but does anyone really care what it is like when Craig Mackail Smith is ripping us a new ********? In my humble opinion our ground has got soul, character and tells a story, a 131 year old story (and we own it).

As for catchment area we do just fine and our fans are scattered far and wide.

I really don't know what people think happens when a club like Burnley can spend over a decade in the Championship and one season in the Premier League, it's certainly not by building new stands or paying players over the odds.

I don't have a problem with Ashley Barnes being sold. It's better to have players you can sell than players you can't.

What I don't understand is how a club that has only 2 fit strikers & 1 of them has only played a handful of games since August comes to the decision to sell 1 of them.the 1 that has lead the line for the last 3 months on his own,the 1 the team has relied on for the last 3 months.

Pottert - I don't think that you need look no further than Barnes' comments, the transfer fee and his contract running out.

You've got a player who for whatever reason wanted away and your club did the right thing in getting decent money for him before his contract ran out.

Now part of the problem may have been that you had a change of manager part way through this season. What I mean by that is, Poyet may have had the situation in control as in replacement targets. The new manager comes in and has a depleted forward line and has to play Barnes as a lone forward.

It all may look like a baffling decision to sell Barnes but it wasn't, it's business and Brighton did the right thing and they'll move on to another forward.

Get over yourself. The away end is, as you say, manky. So you think because I prefer decent facilities to manky that I expect a toilet attendant? I only made repeated comments on this thread in response to others. As for you thinking my comments about Turf Moor are because you signed one of our players-you couldn't be more wrong. Barnes wanted a move to Burnley and got his wish. That doesn't alter my opinion of Turf Moor-I thought it was past its best ages ago whereas you think it has soul and character-what does that mean exactly? For the record, I have been supporting The Albion for over 50 years now and I know what I prefer having suffered Withdean, Gillingham, the latter days of The Goldstone and countless stadia around the country.

In the Argus today, Ash says

...But I'll go away with every happy memory of what I have done for that club. I've put them where they are today really. I got offered a contract in pre-season but it wasn't right for me and my family and that was the only one they offered me. They never came back with anything else. That's football and from then I needed to have a new challenge.

How I felt was do they want me? I knew from the gaffer Oscar Garcia and Jonesy's point of view that they wanted to keep me for a long time. I wanted to stay for a long time, I wanted to be there for the long haul. We were on a dream, a challenge to get to the Prem, and we just missed out last season in the play-offs.

Because if they didn't sell him now he would have left for nothing in 6 months. Simple really.

I'm a big fan if Ashley Barnes, but "I've put them where they are today" is either quoted out of context or very very arrogant.

That surprised me as well. No doubt taken out of context.

Just to clear a few things up.

1. The fee is £750k including add ons.

- £400k up front
- £200k in appearance related add ons
- £150k if Burnley get promoted at any time during the current contract.

2. Ashley Barnes isn't on any more than £5k week at Burnley FC.

3. I am proud to say I helped with the Alive and Kicking Scheme.

4. Burnley FC is a very proud and traditional club whose history of achievements far exceed most clubs in the football league.

5. Turf Moor is an original ground. It is 131 years years old. We don't like to throw things away up North. I am sorry if the facilities aren't to your liking but you obviously didn't watch football in the 70's and 80's or at the Withdean !

6. I have family in Hove who are BHA fans and wish they could still go on the Goldstone Ground rather than have shiny new facilities.

7. Burnley and its surrounding areas has some of the most beautiful countryside in the country and the friendliest people. (Their words not mine)

8. Good luck to Brighton I have followed them as my second team for over 40 years. I like the club the people and the family feel as its very similar to Burnley. I love Hove and also Brighton to a lesser extent but remember that every town and city in the UK is struggling with social issues so don't look down your nose at Burnley, I know first hand what happens in Brighton and even sometimes Hove.

Seems about right to me.

There is one rumour that he was on 1,800 with us, wanted 5K but didn't get it.

There is another ( independent ) rumour that he trebled his wages going to Burnley. 1,800 x 3 = 5,400

The rumours seem to fall in line with each other.

Good post by the way.

Like CMS, Barnes missed too many one on one chances for us. With a decent striker last season we would have been promoted.

We would have had one. A deal had been agreed to swap Hoskins for Murray with Palace over the summer (Murray had not settled at Palace), and was scuppered when Lewis Dunk injured Hoskins in training pre-season. The rest is history....

He said it, or similar, in the interview on the Burnley Player. He looks to be someone who knows what he should say, but it doesn't quite come out as intended. A career in the media does not await.

.

2 points of order. It was a Northerner who threw our old ground away for next to nothing. He wont be forgiven.

I have been to Burnley. It's about as friendly as Afghanistan.

I've been there too, had no problems. For the match later this month I'll be in the Burnley end with one of their STH, and we will have some banter and a pie or two.

There's idiots at all clubs, we have our share too, and there are places in Brighton I wouldn't want to live or drink.

Firstly, I have no idea how credible your point about the fee is, but if you genuinely got him for £400K initially, then I am seriously pissed off we sold him. To get a striker who's got double figures in goals the last two seasons for that little money, even with them being out of contract in the summer, is a joke. We'd have been far better off keeping him and accepting he goes for free in the summer.

Thanks for your help with the Alive and Kicking Scheme. I personally have no issue with Turf Moor but, as I remember, the away end is quite basic (haven't been for about 8 years).

In terms of the Goldstone vs the Amex, I think a lot of fans have rose tinted spectacles towards the Goldstone. In it's day, it looked amazing but by the time I started watching in 1990, it was very run down. Personally, I love the Amex and it has a lot more to it than most new grounds.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'd love to see Burnley beat QPR to the top 2 spot after all the money Redknapp has spent. Maybe we'll be meeting in the Premier League next season!
