The residents who were flooded seem to be. Mind you they cant be the brightest bunch in the world they did buy a house on a flood plain.

Intelligence or economics/work/family reasons? Personally I'd question the sanity of anyone living in Uckfield but people do and who am I to say they're wrong (or mad)?

I'd have more respect for Cameron if he'd met those people and said "I've been to Africa and seen people who've not eaten for a week. I've met men who have lost their legs in Afghanistan. I've seen beggars in India that aren't expected to live to their teens. You've gone three days without electricity and you're calling it a disaster. F..k off and be thankful how lucky you are to live in one of the safest countries in the world you moany basted."

Every cloud has a silver lining, they can all have a party when they have got rid of the smell of sewage from their homes!

It's a local government planning issue, adjudicated and determined by civil servants, who are supposed to be the experts in their field. By politicians, I'm referring to MP's, which is where where the OP was having a playful dig.

Councillors vote on planning issues and are usually in a political party.

Fine, I'm off out for a curry shortly. If I get food poisoning it will be because of the failure of the local environmental health authority, to properly enforce the rules and regulations laid down by Government. It will be the fault of politicians. If I get Cameron knocking on the door of my en-suite tomorrow morning to sympathise, I will be even more pissed off!

Could be the sub heading for this thread. Your anti-Tory threads are getting as boring as Ernest's one-trick jokes.

Sorry to break it to you matey.

It's what I do though, this an my (in-demand I will add) 1901 Club food thread. You pick the same political/racism fight with the same 3 or 4 people, I do this. We all have our themes

What an utterly bizarre argument. You are basically saying that until people's lives are as bad as those you mention, they should accept everything that happens with a shrug, and never should they get upset, never should they complain.

People are entitled to moan when their houses are flooded, with little warning, over Christmas. Then they are without power for several days. All this whilst the power companies make indecent profits ploughing a negligable amount back into customer service.

This 'race to the bottom' type of mentality blows my mind. When things go wrong we should help those who suffer, not tell them that they are not suffering because they don't live in Afghanistan.

Agree with this.
I really hope the people mocking the flood victims have enjoyed Christmas and never get their homes flooded, it's not just property next to rivers, the sea and on flood plains that get flooded, after the 2000 floods I worked on many propertys near farmland and at the bottom of hills that got flooded out.

Very well put. I agree with this.

I agree. Six years ago friends of ours got flooded in August due to a local golf course disturbing local drainage. They didn't get back home for 6 months and, in the meantime, the wife gave birth to twin girls. It was heartbreaking at the time. Flood water is contaminated so it isn't just a case of drying out.

I had to stop reading when it came to the bit about her grandmothers walnut veneer cabinet.

Some people just need to deal with things rather than always looking for someone to blame, a bit of water in your house is hardly the end of the world.

And as for the fella who reckons he was swimming down his road, pulling people out of their houses!

Stick to entertaining children Mr Tumble :jester:

I think I know this house if it's near Peacehaven Golf Club, I have seen the water coming down that hill when we have heavy rain for days on end.

No, it's near Oxford. Their cottage is over 200 years old and had never been flooded before. The golf course denied all knowledge but had been messing around before the rainfall.

Hands up, I got it wrong. I wasn't mocking the flood victims, more that there was a woman on the telly moaning that she'd had no electricity for three days and that her Christmas had been "A complete disaster".

Why do you find such a reasonable position bizarre.

I wish all those people the very best and hope they are back to normal very soon, but what do you really expect when building on flood plains ??

Fine go after the developers, politicians, planners or even the energy companies if applicable but not to acknowledge the inevitability is the bizarre bit.

It isnt a disaster its an inconvenience, a pretty miserable one granted but it should either be covered by their insurers, if it isnt then they needed to be more responsible with that risk, a risk that seems quite high.

I wish them well, but you lot just demanding that the government covers every eventuality might make you feel personally morally superior, but to many you just look foolish.

Finding a solution needn't start with your faux outrage due to your political allegiance, its more important than that.

I would think that was a fair comment from her, figure of speech, I would have thought it ruined something she had looked forward to for some time.

I find it bizarre because it is unreasonable.

Who are you to belittle the misery that many people have suffered over the last week, who are you to tell people that they have suffered an 'inconvenience'? Have you had a comfortable Christmas, have your children been happy?

Where is your empathy?

Many people who live on flood plains have done so for many years. Problems have been exacerbated by developers being given carte blanche to build large housing extates, meaning that drainage problems have increased, flooding has become more likely.

Insurers are loathe to insure these people's properties without massive premiums, and their properties have become unsellable.

Where did I state that the government should cover every eventuality? To suggest that I did makes YOU look foolish. And I've shown no faux outrage, I have suggested that we should care for people who have suffered. You, meanwhile, appear to think that this is not important.
