I think that’s an overly harsh view. You can’t be certain that he IS happy to play a bit part. He might believe that he’s good enough for the number one spot, we just don’t know. As others have said though, and if you listen to Ben Foster’s podcast too, being a back-up goalkeeper is a specialist role in itself. You’ve got to be a cheerleader, a workhorse in training and match day warm-ups, as well as having an excellent temperament. If RDZ and co have decided that JS is the best man for that job then I trust them totally.

Does a single Premier League side have two keepers who are vying for the shirt and get swapped in and out based on form?

The PL stats has 18 keepers who are ever-present or all-but-ever-present (eg Martinez missed a game or two due to World Cup winning celebrations).

The two clubs who don't fit this are Chelsea and Bournemouth.

I know Mendy has been injured at Chelsea, but Potter does seem to be more keen on Kepa anyway. I don't know enough about the Bournemouth keepers to know if they are genuinely competing for the shirt week in, week out.

Jason Steele's job is to be number 2. He clearly fulfils all the criteria and accepts that the football side of his career is playing a few cup games. The rest of the time, he has to be at the top of his game and ready to play when called upon. Meanwhile he plays a full role in the squad and is a key part of the goalkeeper team. He is actually as important as every other key person, staff member or player and undoubtedly earns well as a result. At the end of the day, he is earning a fantastic living for himself and his family, can probably carry on doing it till his late 30's, is involved in ever weekday, matchday and all the other joys of being in and around a Premier League club and players on a daily basis. If he has come to terms with not playing in front of a large crowd every matchday and can develop the skills to be the best number 2 keeper he can, what a cracking job. Sooner that than playing for much less money, week in, week out in the lower leagues with players clattering in to you as the ball falls from the sky for 90 minutes. Pleased for him.

I wouldn’t be that unhappy. The club wouldn’t have him as number 2 if they didn’t believe he could do an adequate job filling in if there’s an injury.

When we were in lockdown, I was fortunate in receiving a phone call from Jason. It must have been daunting for players to ring up pensioners to see how they were doing. He was chatty, friendly and interesting to talk to.
All keepers have mistakes in them, but the club considers he’s good enough, so that’s ok by me.

So much of the goalkeeper role is about psychology. The last thing you want is a goalie who feels "if I make the slightest of mistakes, the bloke on the bench will take my job".

He is doing a fine job as a match day replacement should he be needed. Rest of the season? - I agree he would probably do OK. Could get better, but how many £million do you think we should spend for that?
Hasn't been blooded at top level yet, but can you say with absolute certainty that McGill wouldn't also do a job if called on? Sanchez did.

I had the pleasure of sharing three and a half pints (I had 3) with Rob Green a few years ago. He hadn't played for Huddersfield the season before and Chelsea gave him a one year contract because they wanted someone on the books who was a great professional who could do a job if needed.
