Genuinely hilarious that some people think something someone has talked about a fair bit is somehow a "gotcha" moment
Incredibly some people do appear to be that thick.

But what he did and what Beckham has done are two entirely different things that aren't worthy of comparison.

I assume given your existence in England, you support the Iraq war and the bombing of innocents? Exactly - a ridiculous comparison.
If I was feeling maliciously sarcastic, I’d suggest you are using “whataboutery”.

Always with the name-calling. This is the problem; intelligent debate? Nah, I’m right, you’re wrong. Don’t agree? Well you’re thick, probably a gammon. Then you’re a loony-lefty and the conversation gets dragged down to a desperately poor standard.

So disappointing.

Sorry but sometimes when the sky is blue it doesn't help anyone to call it red.

OK let's try to drag it back up again.

A comedian being paid a small amount by a private company is not the same as someone being paid millions by a government to be a global ambassador for that country and everything it represents. SURELY we can find common ground on that?!

I’d agree with you there.

Classic example of someone preaching about something, then gets caught doing the same thing and tries to justify it and deflect attention with a 'statement' picking on the usual targets to satisfy his target audience. See it so many times, especially from those on the 'left' of society/views etc.

Surely anyone going to Qatar to earn money forfeits the right to criticise others for doing the same thing?

In the same way, I have previously criticised the club for the trip to Dubai, it would be hypocritical of me to fly off there for a bit of winter sun.

I don't know.

Does a vegetarian or vegan have the right to criticise meat-eaters, even though they might have done the same, even if is was many years before?

When did human rights abuses in Qatar begin?

yes that would be the case if he criticised Becks for going to Qatar. as it happens, he didn't, he was criticised for specifically taking part in the promotion/PR campaign run by the Qatari government.

If he was so critical of Qatar that he should create, in his own words, a “press stunt” to draw attention to Beckham, he obviously feels strongly about being anti-Qatar.

But not so anti-Qatar that he would perform there previously. And keep the money he earned performing gigs in a country he so detests. It’s hypocrisy, plain and simple.
Agree.

Good on him that he can go to Qatar and do shows, keep the money and be completely immune to criticism, with people doing their utmost to find angles that makes it ok for him to go and do shows ("it happened to be in Qatar", "getting money from some British promoter getting money from the Qatar state IS SO MUCH DIFFERENT from getting money directly from the Qatari state", "BUT... BUT.. he didn't promote the big sandy deserts! He just came there and... um... made money."

Very convenient. Bloke is laughing all the way to the bank while getting pets on the back for sort of being a victim of David Beckhams cynical business decisions.
