XL Travel go bust leaving a £5m hole in their finances

Their chairman and major backer is a major shareholder in Landsbanki - Iceland's second largest bank that has been taken over by the Iceland Govt - so he's lost hundred's of millions of pounds

He also was a personal guarantor for XL Travel - and now owes £163m to cover their debts

Ruling on Carlos Tevez could cost them anything between £30 and £50m

Plus they are open to being sued by individual players from the teams that went down too.

Despite the official club responses, it is widely believed that he is still trying to sell West ham at a profit.

That is a club with some big problems.

Just to compound it all, they've got Craig Bellamy too. Poor sods.

They do have a ground though. And are in the premiership and guaranteed another a minumum of around £100m because of that.

What goes around comes around. They cheated and lied to stay in the Premiership, so they deserve everything they get.

I think its called Karma.

They'll be fine. Any London club is an attractive takeover prospect-particularly from an area maybe less affected by the current crisis e.g. Middle East .

Pompey on the other hand...

Not saying I sympathise with them - and I'm pretty sure that clubs get nothing like £100m for being in the Premier League - it does just seem to be a lot of grief befalling one club.

Shouldn't have lied then should they.

Bloody hell, a football team that lied! If you take that moral high ground you might as well just watch Stars on Sunday and forget about being interested in football !!

The team that went down at West Ham's expense did so because they were shit and it's funny how the most vocal at the time, Wigan, soon kept quiet after they stayed up !! West Ham even finished above Fulham in the final table.Although Tevez was a great player for the club he wasn't Roy of the Rovers and it's pretty offensive to the other 10 players to suggest he kept the club up single-handedly.

Sheffield United's players sueing for loss of earnings? Talk about pissing in the wind ! Next their fans'll have a go for being emotionally scarred at having to watch Palace rather than Man United!

West Ham held their hands up and were fined an amount thought appropriate by the powers that be and that should be that.

Bloody good point. :jester:

Actually, joking aside, I do have sympathy with the points you make. Especilly the fact the Sheffield Utd went down because they were shit. Yes, maybe WHU would not have gone on the winning streak without Tevez, but one man keeping the entire team up?

Try translating this to us - say Boby Zamora had "done a Tevez" and the teams we beat to promotion to the championship were suing us saying Bobby Zamora SINGLE HANDEDLY got us into the Championship.

Its a mess, and I'd agree its all getting very unseemly with individual players coming out of the woodwork crying for for compensation as well. That is ridiculous.

But I take issue with your last statement. West Sham did not "hold their hands up" at all - they were asked TWICE by the FAPL as to whether or not Tevez was subject to 3rd party ownership (in breach of their rules), and TWICE they brazenly lied and said no, he wasn't. They then played him for the rest of the season, with him scoring 7 in the last 10 to help keep West Sham up at Sheffield Utd's expense. Would they have managed those results with Marlon Harewood up front ? Err...answers on a postcard.

Sheffield Utd have a genuine grievance that has not been addressed. West Sham played a ringer all season, they lied about it so they could continue playing him, and he played a massive part in keeping them up. For the FAPL not to deduct them points for that offence was a dereliction of duty on their part, and Sheff U are fully justified in seeking compensation for that.

* Footnote *

Mansfield Town have this week been found guilty of fielding an ineligable player in the opening two games of this season. They have been docked four points.
West Sham played an ineligable player for an ENTIRE season, and got a small fine.

Thats RIGHT then, is it ?

Well I don't think we would have gone up without Bobby. He didn't do it on his own, but he was a MAJOR part in getting us there, just as little Leon was the next time round

Thinking about it you're probably right. Bad example.

Okay, how about Iwelumo as Tevez, and Brizzle City suing us because he won us the penalty at Cardiff?

Its getting away from the point. You're discussing the merits of individual refereeing decisions, and whether or not they could be deemed correct at the time or not. Thats always a subjective opinion.

In West Shams case, we're talking rules and regulations.

Was Tevez subject to a 3rd party ownership ? Yes.
Is this against the FAPL's rules ? Yes.
Did West Sham lie to cover up this fact when they were directly asked about it ? Yes. (Twice).

Those offences were serious enough, and carried enough ramifications, to fully justify a points deduction. A fine of £5.5m was a completely inadequate punishment in that situation.
