Once I tried yorkshire tea I have drunk no other, it tastes like the tea my granny used to make when I was a kid, and she drank it out the saucer
Having said that I went on a tour of a tea factory in Sri Lanka, they said that most of the popular teas we drink is the dust they sweep up off the floor, they showed me quality tea and the leaves were considerably bigger.
We then went to sample some tea, little old Tamil lady and an urn full of hot mountain water. No milk or sugar, it was the sweetest drink to ever pass my lips.

All this tea talk is making me want a cuppa but it's a bit to late, i won't sleep. tea made properly in a
Pot cannot be beatten, think I might move up the league and try Darjeeling tea.

Yorkshire tea is excellent, especially the specially formulated one for hard water.

I'd never tried it until I was given a free box (my brother is their* Sales Director!)

Totally agree, although we find it is now being given a run for its money by Punjana from Thompson Family Teas (Tesco stock it). Lovely stuff

I'm going to ruin my credentials here by putting a word in for Aldi's Gold.

It tastes great and a single bag is strong enough to comfortably do two mugs of tea from a small pot.

Had the same experience in Sri Lanka, the tea clippings or tips (as in PG Tips) are all graded and end up swept into large holding bays. All the dust and lowest quality small tips are destined for tea bags. That is not to say that a brand may stipulate a proportion of better quality tips in its blend. I don't think it matters really as its all down to personal taste. Its a bit like wine and all the wine snobbery you get I think although not on as bad a scale. I like quite a few supermarket own brand tea bags but do like to relax at home after work with a Twinings Earl Grey.

I like my tea very strong, no sugar but lots of milk. Yorkshire tea is the only tea where 1 teabag will do.

however, i am consideriing switching to loose tea, and need a recommendation, as looking to cut the sugar out of diet due to getting podgy. i know from experience that teabags without milk and sugar taste, in my opinion, dire! so suggestions please

Yorkshire Gold is pretty pricey

Although more than the cheap stuff, tea is cheap. £5.29 for 160 bags at the local shop = 3.3 pence per cup (milk cost not affected by brand choice). How can 3.3p be considered expensive when people will pay a few pounds for a pint of beer.

Firstly, you don't need sugar with your tea. Just stop it and you'll get used to the different taste soon enough.

Secondly, if you're after loose tea try these places, I recommend them all:

Pick one place and get some samples. Yummy.


If you don't go for loose tea, just enjoy some of the decent bags like Yorkshire Gold or Twinings.

Yorkshire tea is available in the local supermarkets over here and it's my brew of choice as the local brands sell Orange Pekoe which is the crappiest tea I've ever tasted.

I can get Twinings Earl Grey, Assam, etc, but it's twice the price and not worth it. I also imbibe in the odd cup of Green tea which is quite decent.

It's readily available in NYC, a bit pricey but much better than Liptons which Americans seem to favour. Still like Typhoo best.
