I've had several peugeots, one had some niggles, the rest were very good. Every manufacturer has their issues.
And Peugeot have made some stunning cars....albeit with a bit of help from pinninfarina....

If you and gf havnt been driving long,you want to think of insurance costs as well
Avoid, as with their sister company Citroen, or Renault or Fiat.
Owned a brand new Peugeot, and as time went on, realised it was crap ..... Electrical niggles, poor service at the dealer eg long queues, poor build quality, and not the cheapest for repairs.
High depreciation rates also.
Have since owned Japanese and German cars, and they are different level above by a long way, in every way. Stick to these, subject to proper checks on the individual car, and you won't have regrets.

I would think twice about buying a Beamer again! I have just paid £1600 to replace the flywheel and consequently the clutch on a one series that has done less than 60k miles.
My wife has a 52 plate 206 and although ithe paintwork is not brilliant, it drives really well and cost bugger all to run.

Thanks all, we have our 2nd kid due in Sept so probably a 4 door is best too.
Not planned on spending that much as its the 1st car and all but it might b worth it to get the right one, there's a lot more choice for 3k .

98k isnt a lot these days,but on the other hand can be pot luck..i bought an astra as a runaround with 57k on it and have had nothing but trouble with engine,clutch is shxt,brakes are crap(will never ever touch vauxhall again!!!).Yet my 1990 300zx twin turbo with 450hp gets seriously hammerd a lot in summer and engine is tottally bullet proof.(then again it is japenese!!)

For what it's worth my view is they are all much of a muchness with maybe
German - overpriced, you pay for the badge (so tend to hold price if buying new)
Japanese - Well made and used to be good value but are now getting pricey

I've had a 206 and it has been nothing but trouble. I genuinely wouldn't buy another Peugeot again - I have replaced the alternator, the battery, the seat runners for the drivers seat, the radiator, the thermostat, the wiring for the air con, the clutch and other bits too.
Every time I have taken the car to be fixed I have been told 'this is a common problem with a 206'.
One dodgy car has put me off the entire brand - although I have run a Renault and a Citroen before with no problems, so it isn't French cars per se. I'm saving up for a Japanese or German car now.

If you're putting kids in it, get a Saab. Spend a grand on a 9-3 and put the rest away for repairs. You'll have a better and safer driving experience.

I have a 5008 semi auto (Work made me do it) and its awful the worst gear box/electronics I have ever had the misfortune of driving. However had a Pug manual van and that was great never had a problem in 140k miles. Mrs C has a Nissan note and that is smooth dripping with toys reliable economic and very very comfortable so much so that when we go out we always take the note rather than the pug

I'd say a Honda VTEC engine is barely run in, with ONLY 100k miles on the clock.

A mate of mine just bought a BMW 3 series with 60k miles for £1700, it's in good condition. He said there were loads of 3 series around at a similar price to golfs and peugeots

I own a 407, apart from some electronic problems a few years ago, it is good. Drives well, looks nice. A poor man's BMW if you like!

I'm subscribing to this thread because I'm in the same boat. I've got about 9k to spend on a new car, and I've narrowed it down to either the VW Up or Skoda Citigo. Both cost about the same, was going to add the Citroen C1 to the list, but people I have spoken to say French cars only good for keeping mechanics in business, and Citroens are the worst of the lot when it comes to reliability. The Ford Ka is an option, but it's a bit...you know...girly, so to speak.
