Slade had roughly the same budget as Poyet, and bought a lot of dross - there lies your answer. Admittedly he bought Bennet, Dicker and Crofts but this was levelled out by the rubbish he bought with them.

He was the perfect man when we were fighting relegation but he proved the following season that he couldn't deal with the expectation at the club. I think Orient are the perfect size club for him to manage, and I hope he does well there as he is undoubtedly a nice bloke.

Is this some sort of wind up?...I take it you actually watch Orient play ilikecandles?..To quote some pundits "Brighton are playing on a different level".....Still you gave me a chuckle when I read the thread title....Slade whipping of his cap and rubbing his head for a laugh at the training ground, might have been ok at the time for a while but we have moved on to a different level.

To be fair to candles, I thought Orient played pretty well the other night - in fact, they were well organised, dangerous on the attack, and possibly a little unlucky not to beat us. Slade has done a very good job there, and good luck to him. He is one of the decent men of football, and with Cox, Revell and Whing there, I hope they do well.

Slade also bought Navarro, which was a big plus too.

If people take off their blinkers Gus has brought some duffers too, Holyroyd, the two Argentinians, Sandaza, and the Norwegian who can't even get on the bench. If you believe Mr Burns then add Barnes to that list too.

ALL managers sign some clinkers, Francis Jeffers £9m to Arsenal, Bebe to United for £7.8m and Glen Johnson SEVENTEEEN AND A HALF MILLION POUNDS

He may have bought Bennett, Dicker, Crofts and Navarro but can anyone say he got the best out of any of them?..Each and every one of those players showed there best form under Poyet. Fact is many on here thought Crofts and Navarro were shite untill Gus got them playing.

I am not saying that we should have Russ ahead of Gus, but Bennett, Crofts and Dicker were playing well for us under Slade too. The BIG difference that Gus made was in signing two fantastic full backs and the best centre half we have had since Guy Butters in Greer.

Slade was fired because we were doing rubbish.

A very decent man, a good firefighter, and perhaps a little more than that if he's at a club with no expectations...

I think he is a terrific manager and i really hope he does well, but Poyet is a different class and I would suggest that he is very close to being the best young manager in the country and is destined for great things. Slade keeps doing the business in league 1 and if he had stayed longer I think he would have turned brighton into a potential play off team, don't forget the luggage he inherited with White and Booker and some seriously dodgy players as well. Good luck baldy, I appreciate your contribution to the club.

Slade bought in some of our best players, Poyet completed the jigsaw.

Slade was very unlucky with injuries etc, and had us scoring goals for fun too (well compared to Mr Adams). Poyet has got us over achieving beyond what anyone expected, so it is hard to compare him to Slade.

Poyet could be down to beginners luck, you never know. Poyet has worked miracles and got us playing the best football I have ever seen us play in 23 years of going

Salad will always be a hero in my eyes for keeping us up and giving us players like Bennett, Crofts, Dicker and Navarro.
However, I can't see him ever being able to get a squad up from League One. He is a battler, a plucky underdog. I don't think he could cope with the expectations or the budget here.
Signing players like Dickinson proved this.

Slade and Poyet have vastly different backgrounds and personalities. With all due respect to Russell he comes form a lower league background with expections and ambitions to match. Poyet has played at the highest levels and has also had experience coaching in the Premier league. Clearly Gus's expectation are higher and he has instilled a very different work ethic it seems to me. If you look at El Abd for example he has brought out the best in a player many thought Slade would have let go for example. Slade is obviously more at home in the Orient environment given that they don't have such an ambitious chairman as Tony Bloom. Good luck to Russell as he's clearly doing a great job at Orient pretty much as he did at Yeovil but I would say Poyet gets the nod given the different circumstances here and in Leyton.

Russ kept us up...against all the odds and that was something Adams wouldn't have done. However,Gus seems to be able to get the best out of players(e.g.Adam el Abd) and has us playing well as a team on a very consistent basis. This is the secret to success IMHO.
Finally,ALL managers however good they are always sign a few duffers!

When Gus first came me and my mate used to marvel at the way he would scream (I mean SCREAM) at Elphick and El Abd to pass the ball. Everyone who got the ball was told to pass, pass, pass. Even when we were getting beaten or in a high tempo game he never stopped jumpinhg off the bench and gesticulating in that oh-so latin way -pass, pass, pass.

In all my years of watching this bloody club no-one has ever done that. Just imagine the confidence that gives blokes who are all decent footballers and know that their manager is telling/imploring them to play posession football. I truly believe that if this bunch of players had been in the championship this year - they'd have made a really decent fist of it and been way up that table too. I really liked Salde too but I just don't think he (or loads of other managers out there) have the inner-confidence to IMPOSE their will on a team and get them to play the way that Gus wants his team to play.

Gus clearly has higher expections of his players than his predecessors. Clearly he demands more but he and Tanno obviously know how to motivate the players and this is reflected in the performance of what was a collection of journeymen now playing like a well oiled machine. I'm sure a lot of people would agree that whilst we might not have the best players overall (moot point) we sure as hell have the best team.
