Worthing v Lewes, April 20th

Report from Steve Watts on the Lewes FC forum:-

Unbelievable, 3-0 up in thirty minutes totally dominant for the next sixty. Jay scored the first with a header the second a bit of a scramble not sure who got the final touch, the third Houghton. Players in with crowd at the final whistle celebrating, magic! Championship for the taking. Every player gave 100% couldnt of dreampt of more! Perhaps unfair to pick any one out of a team of heroes but kenno was inspired tonight and was unlucky not to put the extra layer of icing on the cake with a goal against his old club

Report of sorts.....After a fairly even start, Worthing were caught naping for the first goal, a header by Jay Lovett. Worthing stayed asleep. two more goals followed in the next 15 minutes and the game was over. After the third goal, Worthing finally woke up, creating a number of chances, but the final touch was missing every time. In greasy difficult conditions, Lewes were physically stronger and quicker on the night. Worthing's recent spell of playing catch up on their fixtures after their fantastic cup runs finally caught up with them. Quite simply, Lewes were up for it, Worthing looked lethargic. The steady rain throughout the evening never came to Worthings rescue like it did for Lewes at Christmas. Despite probably conciding the championship tonight, Worthing should be playing in the Ryman premier league next season, which is a fantastic achievment after the turmoil of last year.

Hopefully, Lewes will be able to get through to the new Conference South. If they hold on to win the Championship (and with two relatively easy games facing them, they should do), they qualify for a complicated series of play-off matches, culminating in two teams getting into Conference South.

The nine teams involved in the playoffs will be the Champions of the Ryman 1st Division (South), the Champions of the Ryman 1st Division (North) and the teams finishing in 14th to 20th positions in the Ryman Premier.

The play-off fixtures:-

Game 1 - 3rd May
Champions of 1st Division North will play the Champions of 1st Division South. Home club will be the club with the best playing record

Game 2 - 5th May
Position 14 v Winner Game 1

Game 3 - 5th May
Position 15 v Position 20

Game 4 - 5th May
Position 16 v Position 19

Game 5 - 5th May
Position 17 v Position 18

Game 6 - 8th May
Winner Game 2 v Winner Game 5

Game 7 - 8th May
Winner Game 3 v Winner Game 4

The winners of Games 6 and 7 qualify for inclusion in the Conference South. Home club in matches 6 & 7 will be the team with the higher league position.

Three games in six days is one hell of a programme to decide things.

I went to the Bognor Regis v Canvey Island game instead.

Pete Smith was as shocking as I remember, with barley any passes going to a teammate.

For me the man of the match was Jeff Minton, who despite looking a shadow of his former glory days for us, still used the ball intelligently enough to make him stand out head and shoulders above the rest.

Result 0-0.

Just got back from match via The White Star on the way back.

Thought I was in a dream when we was 3 nil up and the second half did not look like losing it. Can't make Bristol on Saturday so will be heading to scumland (Croydon) on Saturday to watch the Mighty Rook go one more game closer the title.

Nice one Lewes.

I used to 'bunk' into the Dripping pan when I was a nipper to avoid spending my 50p pocket money.

I did, however, spend it on a coke, Mars bar & packet of crisps though - or Bovril when it was cold!

I think of it as my 'apprentiship' for the Albion.

Superb memories.

Worthing are not out of it yet.
Cheating Lewes so and so's.
The game that was called off ,should have stood.
At least our ground is up to standard.

Trust Worthing to mess it up. I went to the original game, in December. The conditions were no worse after eighty-three minutes of that match than they had been at the start, yet the referee saw fit to abandon the game with the Rebels 2-0 up. We can all react, pleased or disappointed, according to which of these two Sussex teams we support; but how would we feel if this had happened to the Albion?

It was a robbery by the Rooks no question. Hell, I'm not complaining! The game in December was a farce - it was finally called off when the ball didn't bounce in the Worthing penalty area. However, as much as Lewes deserved to lose then, they deserved to win last night.

After threatening to screw it up this season, they should become deserved champs on Saturday. Alas I shall be at Bristol City so I won't hear the result until probably Sunday morning.

Come on you Rooks!

Great result! Worthing is a right pikey dump full of West Sussex bumpkins and scag pushers! Up the Rooks!

Your imaginative description of Worthing might be amusing but it's not Worthing District Council that is doing its best to destroy the Albion.
