That was good captaincy from Hammond, Waugh had played a few shots uppishly but Stokes may have produced extra bounce.
Gilchrist has come in and promptly hit the first ball for four, smacking it through the covers and then scampers a sharp single. Trumper is not so quick on his feet and could have been in trouble if Hobbs' throw had hit.

It's only ten minutes to tea but Gilchrist is not playing for the break, he's straight driven Barnes for four and followed that by an extraordinary slog sweep into the crowd for the first six of the game.
Trumper's getting into the act too. He's driven Stokes sweetly through the covers - that's the shot of the day so far

And no fireworks in the last over before tea. Trumper takes a single, Gilchrist pushes a gentle two and it's tea with Australia at 207-5
I think England will be happy with that, the pitch is playing a lot easier now and this looks like a decent batting wicket when the sun's out. If Gilchrist gets going, the situation could change but I think England would be pleased if they were batting at any point today. And if they got Australia out for under 300, they'd be delighted

More steady bowling from Barnes who's still doing a bit with the ball, just a single from it
And now it's Stokes to Gilchrist who's champing at the bit after that over from Barnes. The first ball is pushed firmly for two, he tries to do the same off the second but it's a superb stop by Hobbs in the covers.
But Gilchrist is not to be thwarted and cracks the next ball through mid-off. That went like a tracer bullet

Oh, this is horrible. I think he was trying a slower ball out of the back of the hand but it went very, very wrong. It's a slow full toss that Gilchrist wallops somewhere in Row Z. He goes into the 40s.
