Wifey just summond me out to the garden.
There hovering around the lavender was something I'd not seen before.
It was big (a lot bigger than a big bee) seemed to have black & white strips across it's back with a seriously fast wing flap.

Wifey had a closer look & is adament it also had a beak.

Who's right? (like I don't already know)

Don,t think you,ll find them in the uk.....

However....if MRS.Stat Brother says it,s a humming bird.....THEN IT IS....!

If she says it's a hummingbird, what do YOU say it is?

From this description, it sounds like a moth or a beetle.

Probably a hummingbird hawk moth.....becoming more and more common in souther UK. Fascinating little critters.

We've got a hummingbird where I work! We have dropped a couple of hints to her that if she was to take a bath occasionaly she might not hum as much but it's been to no avail so far.

i saw a kingfisher on the dirty banks of the irwell a few months back, and we get herons up here all the time, right in the middle of the city - the most i saw at cuckmere haven was a rubbish mallard or something.

Along with the herons, swans etc on the Newhaven wetlands.
There are three duckponds just down the road with moorhens, mallards, coots etc and kingfishers on the river.

Hiney is probably right, it might have been a hummingbird hawkmoth...I can remember it attacking him at Yeovil as I was only a few feet away, also Jakey breaking the net at half time, the only memorable parts of the evening...but unrelated to what your wife saw in the garden.

Could have been a CockChaffer (sp?) or (as others have suggested) one of the Hawkmoths
