Sounds very much like a Hummingbird Moth, as stated previously.
I had a close encounter with one on my gap year. The Ecuadorian farmer that was staying in our log cabin, decided to make us chips. He ended up having a chip pan fire and melted one of our window nets (6' x 4'). So the entire insect population of the Cloudforest decided to head towards the lights. We ended up with about 60 or 70 different species in the cabin (bugs, beetles, moths etc.) including a couple of them. We did not sleep very well that night.
