The second legs of the Champions League first qualifying rounds have been completed and it is confirmed that...

Brighton will not play a team from Albania, Armenia, Estonia, Georgia, Gibraltar, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Romania and (kind of) Wales in the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League.

Disappointing result for Farul Constanta (Romania) who lost 3-1 on aggregate, and will not progress, after a 3-0 away defeat at Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova).
Also, The New Saints (England/Wales) were unable to preform a comeback against BK Hacken (Sweden) as they lost 5-1 on aggregate, after a 2-0 home defeat in the second leg.

Well not in this year's Europa League, Gonzo, as Rakow Czestochowa (Poland) were simply butter than Flora (Estonia) with the former side winning 4-0 on aggregate, beating Flora 3-0 away in the second leg.

With that, we can see how the Champions League second qualifying round looks like...

Some big names will be joining at this stage, including Copenhagen (Denmark) and Galatasaray (Turkey), with the first leg being played on the 25th/26th of July and the second leg on the 1st/2nd of August.
For more information on this round, check post #5 on this thread!
Gutted that Ferencvaros didn't make it through, would've loved a trip to Budapest. Mad that Klaksvík beat them. An away day to the Faroe Islands would really be for the die hards.

Crazy result yes. Orban has spent a lot of money on trying to make Hungarian sports "great again". The flagship team losing 3-0 against a team from the Faroe Islands probably wasn't planned.

Thank Christ for that . No wish to travel to any of these places with the exception of maybe Malta

Klaksvik? Shows how far Fenrencvaros have fallen. They used to be European giants. (My brother once confounded his primary school teacher, in his "news" book, by asking her how to spell Ferencvaros.)

Klaksvik's a nice place, but tiny. Torshavn is where the action (!) is at.

Horrendous for them, they've been to a European Cup final too. They've got Shamrock Rovers up next.

Have some distant family living in the Faroes so I've been once. Getting there will be a task, UK> Copenhagen > Faroes won't be cheap. Thankfully Tórshavn to Klaksvík isn't that far, but it will feel like a long way after the travel!

Thanks @Krafty some hard work put in by yourself. 👍
Am I right that Rangers join the Champions League 3rd Round Qualifiers and defeat would send them into the Europe League?
Thanks Knocky,
Whoops... yes, Rangers are in the Champions League third qualifying round - thanks @Joey Jo Jo Jr. Shabadoo!
As they say, Rangers will have to win two ties, the third qualifying round and the play-off round; defeat in either means they'd be in the Europa League group stages
Are there any teams from Israel in the draw ?
Maccabi Haifa is the only team from Israel that we could potentially face in the 2023-24 Europa League.
They won 6-1, on aggregate, against Hamrun Spartans (Malta) to reach the Champions League second qualifying round and there is a promising chance that we may see them in the draw. 👀

Thanks Knocky,
Rangers are in the Champions League play-off round; this means that defeat would send them into the Europa League group stage (with Brighton) however if they were to win then they would be sent to the Champions League group stage.
Rangers actually enter at the 3rd qualifying round, they’d have to win 2 ties to get to the CL group stage. Defeat in either means they’d be in the Europa League group stage.

Unbelievable scenes in the Glentoran v Gzira United UCL qualifier.

Glentoran get an equaliser in the 13th minute of stoppage time.

The game goes to extra time, then penalties.

Both teams score all 11 of their penalties including both keepers who took the 11th and scored.

Gzira score their 12th, Glentoran player has his shot saved, the Gzira keeper runs off and celebrates, but the ball spins back in slo-mo into the goal!

Both teams score their 13th penalty. Gzira score their 14th penalty, but finally Glentoran have their 14th saved. And this time the ball stays out.

Phew. The Gzira keeper will sleep a little better tonight.

The draw for the Champions League third qualifying round has been made today:
Screenshot 2023-07-24 12.17.44.png

Teams on the left will play the first leg at home (on the 8th/9th of August), then the second leg away (on the 15th of August).

The second qualifying round hasn't been played as of yet, so we don't know which 12 additional teams will progress to this stage, but you can find the matches on post #17 of this thread

There are two different ways of qualifying as seen:
Champions Path consists of teams who were champions in their country's first division, typically a lower ranked league (e.g. AEK Athens, as shown).
League Path consists of teams who finished 2nd or 3rd in their country's first division, typically a higher ranked league (e.g. Rangers, as shown).

Winners of these ties will advance to the Champions League play-off round of their respective path.
Losers of the Champions Path will be transferred to the Europa League play-off round.
Losers of the League Path will be transferred to the Europa League group stage.

This means that both winners and losers of this round could play us in the 2023-24 Europa League group stage.

Another draw happened today, this was for the Europa League third qualifying round:

Teams on the left will play the first leg at home (on the 10th of August), then the second leg away (on the 17th of August).

There are two different ways of qualifying as seen:
Champions Path consists of teams who were champions in their country's first division, typically a lower ranked league.
Main/League Path consists of teams who finished 2nd or 3rd in their country's first division, typically a higher ranked league (e.g. Olympiacos, as shown).

Losers in this round will not be able to play us in the Europa League, however the winners might have a chance.

If you don't understand anything I've written in these last two posts, then don't worry, because UEFA will never make it simplistic and decide to do the draw when we know the allocated teams - oh, and the pathway thing... o_O

For a multitude of reasons, I’d like the following group:

Roma/Atalanta
Brighton
Stade Rennais
Sparta Prague
Qarabag (via Frankfurt or Istanbul by the look of things but plenty of choice) looks interesting to me, and I would very happily go to Lisbon too :giggle: RDeZ would love Atalanta

Have never quite understood how it can be justified that you can get knocked out of a competition and as a consolation are put in another one
If we lose a couple of games do we then play in the other one ?

Yes, if we finish 3rd in our group we go into the Conference League.
