Porthcurno Beach  Even more stunning in the flesh, and best of all there was hardly anyone on it when we were there last week.

Having done the "Who needs to go abroad when you've got the Lake District" thread in June (and thoroughly enjoyed it), I'm following this "Who needs to go abroad when you've got Cornwall?" thread shortly, and have a week in Newquay booked.

Google Maps routes us down the M5 (from the Midlands) and around Exeter. I remember Exeter used to be a real bottleneck. Is it any better now? Are alternative routes worth considering?

Ironic that he chose an iffy week given that he knows more about the weather than anyone I have ever met.

The irony was not lost on me, don't worry. Whilst the SE was sweltering in humid plume conditions, with 27-30C and sunshine, the North Cornish coast was persistently cloudy, with periods of drizzle and a nagging SW wind.

My understanding of the weather only increased the annoyance to me!!

We had a wonderful time all the same, and at least the temperatures were decent (18-22C) even in the wetter weather, and also, at this time of year the sea temps are near their max (19C).
