Who needs to go abroad when you've got Cornwall?

I prefer GUARANTEED sunshine and HEATWAVE conditions. What could be more depressing than sitting around in the pissing drizzle in Cornwall knowing its supposed to be your "summer holiday".

That said, I do like the West Country and have had some nice long weekends in North Devon. But I wouldn't risk it for my proper 2 weeks holibobs, thats for sure.

With more relaible weather Cornwall is nice but I would still question the infrastructure to allow people to get to the beaches.

Cornwalls brilliant, but a pain if you dont drive

Nice if its sunny, for sure.
But if I've not been on a plane, I just don't really feel I've had a holiday. Its great to actually leave this country for a week or two, just to get away from the rip-off prices and endless rules, regulations and bollocks we have to put up with in our everyday lives over here. Its just so much more LAID BACK when you're abroad.

After years of what I guess is probably holiday snobbery "the UK - why would you want to holiday here?" - I've really warmed to spending longer periods of leisure time in this country this year.

We've spent some fab weekends in this country in Devon and Cornwall for a few years, as well as visits to other parts such as Snowdonia and the Lake District, but it was only this year, at the rip old age of 37, that I have spent what could be better termed a 'holiday' in the UK.

Despite living where we do however we didn't go West but headed East to North Norfolk which also has some brilliant beaches and many other things to do including The Broads of course, and had an amazing time.

We popped down to Bude in Cornwall this weekend too to visit NSC's Papa Lazarou and family who are taking a break down there at the moment. The weather wasn't as kind as it could have been, but it was still decent enough to ensure we all, especially the kids, had a fantastic time.

Why go to Cornwall when you've got abroad?

Airports/Airport queues, immigration, customs, sun burnt Brits Abroad etc. etc. Give me ten mile caravan tail backs on the A30 any day

Guaranteed weather abroad, as well as (if you want to) the chance to experience something unique every time in the way of sights and culture.

Main point for me is that, what with cheap package deals, flights, and living so close to Gatwick, its just as cheap, if not cheaper, to go abroad than somewhere like Cornwall. Maybe with a large family this changes...

just got back from a week camping in Cornwall. It was great, rained a bit but who cares - we surfed, cycled, walked and coasteered in the watergate bay, polzeath, padstow area, also had some great meals out...hardly used the car all week.

Ironic that he chose an iffy week given that he knows more about the weather than anyone I have ever met.

I think I had the same mentality bred into me from when I was a kid. Every year family holidays were the 'traditional' 2 weeks short-haul sun trip - Malta, Greek Islands, North Africa and the Canaries. We had a great time, undoubtedly, but on reflection it was all a bit samey. Early morning ride to Gatwick with my Dad's cabbie mate, Dad doing the "tickets, passports, money" checklist about 589 times, duty free where my folks picked up cheap ciggies and some new smellies, 3-4 hour flight on a 737, that 'hot air curtain' effect as you disembark the plane, and then 2 weeks of hot weather, sun cream, swimming, calamari and cabaret entertainment.

And, at the same time, I saw precious little of this country. In fact I only really started seeing bits of it when I began following the Albion away every other week. I have the surname 'McKay' but I didn't make my first trip to Scotland until my late 20s when I had a daytrip for work to an office in Edinburgh.

It's only as I've entered my 30s that my appreciation for the UK has grown.

I'd put it above anywhere with substantial numbers of "sun burnt brits." Cornwall is lovely I accept, but I'm with Easy 10 - I wouldn't go there for anything more than 2/3 nights. Give me a new and interesting foreign destination every time, especially one where you know what the weather will be like. I'm not someone who likes extreme sunshine, but going to Cornwall and finding it pisses down for two weeks solid has got to be a right downer.

Although I'm on here to advocate Cornwall - the first British holiday we've had in years - there's too much world (and even UK) out there to return to the same place year after year. We were amazed at the number of families at our Youth Hostel who not only came back to Cornwall every summer, but to the same Youth Hostel as well, and who all knew each other from previous summers!

On a similar note I am surprised at people who travel to New Zealand and who have not seen the Scottish Highlands.

I am alone in saying I found Cornwall ferociously expensive, car parks ripping you off (miles form where you want to go), anywhere decent to eat well over priced, and the really shit places to eat were too.
You find a stunning village, you want to pop in and take a look around, but you've been stung for a fiver before you leave the car park, and you are still a mile and a half away from where you want to be.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the place, scenery, sights, history and that, but it just seemed to me to be so expensive, and the parking wardens are worse than Central London, or Brighton.
