Obviously not a good time to carry on this debate.

Good luck

i don't agree with anyone who says they give them away like sweeties did anyone stop to think that maybe we are getting more intelligent generally or teaching standards are up?

i took a levels in 98 and wouldn't wish the stress on anyone. they mean more in my generation than i think they did in older generations as everyone is under pressure to go to uni get qualifications etc etc to get a good job. i cried when i failed one of mine but i was still able to get into my college course after. uni never interested me however i have a good job now which i am pleased about

Something that everybody has overlooked is that the system of AS and A2 has made it harder to fail. The fact is that after a year there is a choice on whether to continue or drop courses students don't feel comfortable with. Previously, the two year A level meant that what you choose you continued with until the end. You take five AS levels then dispense with two at A2 level. By passing your AS you have already gained half an A level and if you fail any modules at AS you can retake them whilst doing your A2. Those who found the going tough at AS may well drop out before they continue with A2, under the previous ssystem a number of students through a number of different reasons would continue and take exams with the distinct possibility of failure. The AS and A2 system has removed this, those doing A2 level have already surmounted one hurdle during the first year of 6th form life, a lot of hard work in the second year should guarentee a pass of some sort. Consequently, those not able have been weeded out before they get to sit their A2 level. In effect the system is designed for 90%+ pass rates because those incapable have already fallen by the wayside before they get to sit the exam.

Uncle C, have you actually thought about what you are saying?
No people taking A levels now didn't take them 20 years ago, but people who took them 20 years ago aren't taking them now are they?!
Also, a substantial amount of the material covered in A levels these days is that which was being covered in degrees 20 years ago because that is the way things work what with times changing and everything - new discoveries etc. And now that you can't get jobs with just A levels that you could years ago and need a degree to get them shows that A levels have actually become a lot more demanding in what they cover. Perhaps they have just changed.
