Can't help but think Dean Ashton would have been England's number 9 for a long time had he not had to retire after shitty luck with injuries in his prime.

Kevin Beattie, Ipswich and England. Only won 9 caps but would have got 100+ if not for injury. Was reckoned one of the best ever English defenders, Bobby Robson said he was the best English player ever, retired aged 28.

Agree with this! and if my memory serves me well then I seem to remember that Bryan Robson also used to pick up quite a few injuries.

And to think Shaun Wright-Phillips ended his career with what must have been a bizarre challenge in training. How badly can someone of his size injure a man of Ashton's size with a tackle?! I remember it being said at the time that it was a heavy challenge, how heavy could it have been?!

Alvaro Recoba... Unbelievable left foot!

Absolutely seconded. What a player he should have been.

-ronaldo....one of the most accomplished strikers the world has ever seen....his career could've been even more incredible had he not suffered from injuries
-hargreaves....really talented midfielder whose technical ability was greater than most of his england colleagues
-ashton....a big english striker with technical ability, pretty much unheard of
-owen....think back to how incredible he was in his youth, without injuries would've been the best english striker of all time
-king....brilliant centre back
-woodgate...ditto king

Gotta agree on these two (the others have been covered enough). Ronaldo was absolutely sensational through his PSV / Barcelona years. He was brillliant after that but his injuries meant that he's never quite meet that standard again. Imagine if he'd stayed fit? He'd have been terrifying...

As for Ashton, my mate is a West Ham fan and his hope for that season went when Ashton got injured. I remember him being remorselessly effective against us against Crewe too.
