Going on the basis of what most assistant managers do, I would expect his role to include coaching, tactical planning with Micky, bringing new ideas to the table both pre-match and during matches, dealing with the players on a personal and professional level, identifying new signings, as well as generally doing whatever Micky wants him to. I have no real idea how good he is at the player relations stuff (although the total disregard a few of the players, mainly Forster, have for him during matches is a clue), but tactically I think the man is a buffoon with no more idea than you or I. And as your next question will be what reason do I have for saying that, I will say now it's down to all the radio/seagulls world appearances he has made in his years here.

Edit: AND his clueless demeanour on the touchline.

BRILLIANT. So, he looks a bit dim and doesn't come out with anything AWE-INSPIRING on the radio. Unlike most football club staff of course who usually recite poetry or make profound judgements on the meaning of life.

Tell me, have you ever heard of a man called DUNCAN FLETCHER (the clue is "cricket")?

No, you fool, it's not about any of that crap, it's about sounding like you know what's going on and being tactically astute. Duncan Fletcher, however boring he may be, was spot on with everything he ever said during his time with England. Dean White's blagging it. Just listen to him.

Duncan Fletcher never said anything even remotely significant or astute in an interview in his time as England coach. He made me want to kill myself, to be honest. But what he said behind closed doors obviously worked. As for Dean White, none of us (even you) know his worth to the Albion set-up or how good he is at his job. Its total guesswork. And why didn't his apparent shitness cost us last year? We came 7th, remember.....

i dont think white's image was helped last year by recieving instructions every thirty seconds on a mobile phone - particularly when he couldnt hear what wilkins was trying to say, so he had to jam one finger in his ear and take up a ludicrous pose in order to do so - it was reminiscent of a sunday league manager, not what you expect to see at a league one club

when coppell sat in the stand, he trusted booker to get on with the job. that portrays confidence in an assistant, and makes him appear compotent. the fact that white seemingly had to be TALKED through what to do doesnt

My main gripe with the Albion at present is the negativity and fickleness amongst certain pockets of fans at the Withdean. Im all for constructive criticism of the team - even during games but some of the abuse aimed at the team on Boxing Day and the language used was simply shocking. Whilst I understand how people must feel, I cant see how it helps the team when as we know at Withdean they can hear every single word that is shouted!

As for why did we come 7th last year, well, I'm in a minority of about one here I think, but I like Wilkins AND Adams, and I think Wilkins did a damn good job by himself last season.

Poor old Dean, if things go OK, it was all the bosses doing, if they go badly, he's must take the blame.

I can't help but think that you're basing your beliefs on very little. People in football rarely say anything astute or insightful. In fact, most of what they say is pure bollocks whether it's Micky Adams or Alex Ferguson.

I think ultimately, in the absence of any direct knowledge, you have to look at the fact that more than one manager has valued him enough to have him (in a key position) in their team. I too liked Wilkins and I still respect Micky for all he has done for this club and frankly if either of them had the lummox you say they have in their team then I'm fairly sure he would have been ditched long ago.

We are just about to enter 2009 and we are still no closer to knowing what our best starting eleven is than when MA took over.
