I am wondering what jobs the Albion Stewards do the rest of the week when they are not watching the Albion for Free...

I think maybe they are Traffic Wardens ??

possibly students getting a few more quid??

What we NEED is an actual STEWARD to answer this question...BUT I don't know of any REAL LIFE STEWARDS who might frequent NSC who could answer this question.

Shame that.

I worked at Whaddon Road and Wembley, during my time as a student.

Did you have to sit and watch the crowd, rather than the action on the pitch? I don't know how stewards can sit watching the crowd for something like two hours and ignore everything going on behind them. Not really a job for those who like football!

Abort, retry, fail
I was supposed to watch the crowds, but spent most of the time watching the action. Away crowds varied alot. Halifax brought 50, so I saw the whole game. Peterboro' brought 1,000 so I had to watch the crowd.

My first match, I had to escort some players (can't remember who the team was) into the dressing room as they were having a right old barney with their fans at the final whistle.

Marvellous scenes when the tannoy announced..."Chester City 1 Brighton and Hove Albion 7". That certainly cheered me up after a 90 minute spell in the rain.

Wembley was great. I was normally picked to stand on the Wembley Stairs. The greatest moment was Chippenham Town vs Deal. I was supposed to be doing the FA Cup final, but our team 'leader' forgot to fill up and we broke down somewhere west of Hillingdon and missed it.

Has there ever been any major trouble in the North stand? There used to be stewards at the front of every section in the North facing the crowd but they disappeared a couple of seasons ago. I can only presume that we in the North are less troublesome than that lot over the other side.

Not from what ive heard, he works by the directors area. He said they all just watch the "crowd" and football from the top of the stands...

Yes I know Steward433 is a steward who posts on here as he's told us quite a few times...!

A Q&A session would be cool, rather like the one we had with Tank ages ago!

Another Withdean steward here!

Sit down while you type, too, and put those cigs out while I'm online you bunch of miserable monkeys.

When I'm not zoo-keeping at Withdean, I'm in construction - currently painting, then laying carpets for the current client. So I do often wear a hi-vis vest even when in my dayjob.

The utter POWER I feel standing in front of a stand, makes me feel like a cross between the incredible Hulk and Darth Vader.

All gibberish of course, but it sounds good.
I'm not a trained killer or a traffic warden, and unlike steward 433 I don't look and sound like Blakey off On The Buses. But, like him, I am a lifelong Albion fan who's happy to work for the greatest club in the history of football, and be there to be part of it even in this humble, but integral and necessary job.
If anyone has to monitor you fans, it might as well be someone sympathetic, who would rather help you to 'meet league requirements' than some power-lusting wannabe cop-cum-thug, or twathead who never had a position in his/her life but wants to throw a little shitty weight around behind a uniform.

*Somehow*, Albion stewards have been VERY successful, have won awards and accolades from many quarters, and got the job done in a sensitive area of Brighton. Most complaints about The Albion have been that the tannoy music is sometimes too loud!
Two arrests in several seasons, includes one this season for a mentalist who decided to bat a policewoman!

The politics of crowd control and management includes, along with a tiny amount of authority - the responsibility and knowledge to LOOK AFTER THE GENERAL INTERESTS, SAFETY AND HEALTH OF OUR CROWD! Small potatoes?
Hmm, yes - well I am always glad when people think it looks nice and easy, or that we are just a minor nuisance hanging about around you. It means we are doing our job alright, and our presence is averting the need for anything more, anything more socially authorative (like the old bill), or the unthinkable alternative like the council pulling our rights at Withdean Stadium!

The more intelligent fan can conceive how many things we do cover, and how simple it would be for things to denigrate into mayhem or unruly disorder. We are in contact with the medics in case you, yes YOU get into physical difficulty - by accident or by unforseen ill health. The cameras all around Withdean can be trained on any part of the crowd to identify problems before or after they may happen. We take lost kids to a place of safety so they can be collected by a correct person and not a wrong-un, or we watch over and friendly chat to that tiny daughter while daddy uses the toilet.
We are there to see that your experience and that of all the other fans around you, is available to you as entitled by the ticket you paid for. Not so one can stand in front of another and block their view so that ONE person can say they saw the game standing in their seat-place, while the other saw nowt. That lad with antisocial habits who swears in front of children at the top of his voice or berates all our players without encouragement? He's not going to get away with it unfettered for long, and that regular seat you like to come back to won't make you regret being near that idiot.
Handicapped people get assistance when or if they want it, just like the fully abled.
We stop trouble before it affects you - many times you aren't even aware that it even existed, and we've got it sorted.

Easy peasy - and then it's off to that regular day-job loaded with responsibilities..... or devoid of any whatsoever. Either way, at Withdean we are a little more 'on our toes' than a traffic warden meter midget!

By the way - watching what's going on on the pitch is also often important in our job. We need to know what is likely to happen in the crowd, and sometimes with the players or officials. And, we occasionally want to see how the mighty Brighton And Hove Albion are doing.
