Weymouth 1-3 Brighton & HA

Molango ran his heart out and put in a few agressive tackles - he doesn't seem to understand the term friendly. He took quite a lot of clog from their defenders and got no protection from Royston the ref but apart from a few shoulder barge retaliations, he just got on with it.

I'm not convinced about a partnership with Leon yet - Leon doesn't like passing much and there was very little interplay between the two. All 3 goals were very well taken and Molango's was an extremely powerful finish when through on the keeper.

In the first half we were very poor - didn't look particularly pleased to be there and their keeper made his first save on the stroke of half time. We showed much more urgency in the second half and played very well but it was difficult to judge as they made 6 subs after 50 minutes so we were almost playing their reserves when we scored our 3 goals. And the centre half whose testimonial it was was pushed up front at the same time.

Their goals was very neatly worked and was similar to Swindon's second in the playoffs - a neat one two putting their right winger through on Kuipers and a neat sidefoot finished it off. Before that, Michel had made a blinding save from a point blank header and we also survived a comedy pinball effort. They faded in the second half but looked a very good team in the first and thet have a few old pro's in the team - mostly old Torquay/Plymouth/Exeter Old Boys such as Paul Gibbs. They would be a good bet for the Southern Conference this season - if they don't go bankrupt first. Claridge has spent an awful lot of money on their team and they were practically begging for money on the PA - some kind of pop concert to raise funds.

Considering a full strength Sheff Utd team won 5-3, it probably wasn't a bad performance. Currie put in a couple of nice crosses and showed a bit of skill on the wing - a bit Brooker like. Hammond and Oatway looked poor in the first and, believe it or not, things improved when Lee replace Hammond. Butters seemed a bit lumbering in the first half and Mayo looked good going forward but suspect at the back - their goal came on Mayo/Butters side. OGH seemed more interested in squaring up to their left back than playing for his place. Jonah was his usual self - good pace and skill with no end product. Michel played well and had no chance with the goal.

Weymouth Report

Kuipers - One Outstanding Save in the First Half. Apart from that and the goal he never really seemed to troubles.

El-Abd - Adam must be so close to the first team. He plays far beyond his years. He's strong, quick, gets forward, finds a pass. His crossing let him down but a very decent game and linked up very well with Darren Currie.

Cullip/Butters - Same old.

Mayo - Awful first half. He looked shockingly poor but in the second half he improved a lot (as did the team) and he played pretty well setting up Molango for the third.

Hart - Can't say I noticed him all that much

Hammond - Was looking forward to seeing him play after the great reviews from Orient. Played it around quite nicely but didn't look to have much presence.

Oatway - Same old.

Jones - Quick and up for it. Almost scored in the second half following a good build up.

Knight - Very quiet most of te time with little service. Took his goals very well. Especially the second where he was clattered in the air but regained his balance and smacked it into the bottom corner from some way out.

Molango - Like Knight he was quiet first half. He showed great acceleration and pace though. He's very quick. Plus he turns really quickly. He isn't strong but he can just turn direction so quickly. Delivered quite a few decent crosses and passed it nicely. His finish suggestes he deffinatly has an eye for goal. Blatant penalty turned down. I was impressed. Only criticisim was his strength. He was muscled off the ball a bit and came across as a bit of a pansy!

Subs -

Currie - Played well and started up the move for the third goal from our own goal-line. Ran at players. Passed well. Got forward. Linked up well with El-Abd. Promising but need to see more of him.

Lee - Played really well imo. I was suprised! Fair play to him though. He done good.

Weymouths first goal was embarasing. They just played it through us. It was good but then they're conference league. What will Championship sides do? Hopefully a minor blip.

Darren Currie has been knokcing about for years. I always thought he had the talent to go a long way in the game whoch makes me think he's got attitude problems. If he has we've certanly got the right manager to put that right.

Presumably. I guess The Argus will reveal all in the evening edition after an interview with McGhee.

All we know for sure is that he's on a free and he played for us last night.

even though he set up more goals than any other player last season?

i know, lets f***ing moan about jonesy, yeah, that is always good fun.

at least he looks like he wants to play rather than not bothering through the winter months (a la Brooker).

Am I supposed to rise to that bait or something? I call it as I see it. Jones delivers one good cross out of 10 as far as I can see. Probably 0 out of 6 last night.

Jones - still has to prove himself at div one / The Championship level IMHO... not much cop last time round and correctly ousted by the far better player - Brooker...

To be fair, he did have a spell last season when he was laying on most of our goals...

Would love to see Stephen Hunt here... he would then be my 1st choice on the left wing...

I agree that he had a good spell and he is a good player on his day - no-one can take away the contribution he has given to this club. But, like Brooker, the final ball is lacking more often than not. He's no Clive Walker.

And to have such a vitriolic attack from a blatant spammer made my day! :jester: Go back to your wonderfully interesting Diaries.

Thanks TGC and Turkey for that comprehensive round-up.

I see McGhee has put the poor first half down to fatigue. Let's hope so.

Turkey makes an important point about Molango - it was also evident in the Crawley match that strength on the ball was not his thing and he got muscled off too easily a few times. This will be meat and drink to experienced Div One defenders. But McGhee has made it clear that he is going to work on this as a priority, build him up and get him more robust. We mustn't expect too much from Molango too soon, I think it will take him time to come to terms with the physicality of Div One football.

Currie sounds promising although he needs a full game - I'm really tempted to go up for Stevenage now to see if he can play his way into a contract.

I'll be very relieved when we get Chippy and Reidy back, we sorely need their composure and experience ASAP. I'm a bit worried by OGH's pre-season form but Jonah seems keen and ready, Piercy - who knows.
