If Hodgson was picking his striker on the evidence of finishing in training today then Welbeck is making a compelling case ahead of Carroll.

So who do YOU prefer. Personally I'd go for Welbeck. If England do have a good tournament, I reckon it will be because he will be our version of Toto Schillachi.

After watching the training this morning, not Caroll. I don't think he scored at all. Shot over the bar, wide, and hit about 5 air shots. HOWEVER, Welbeck was training with Rooney, and Carroll with Young, so maybe our answer is there?

Welbeck, with Carroll to come on as Plan B if we're not getting a sniff of the ball in the final third.

Carroll - I think he'd provide great service to CMS and with Buckley and Lua Lua, he'd definititely get the crosses to knock down to him.

I actually think Michael Owen, if fit would be good enough to get into this patchwork team.

Personally, I think the support cast around the lone forward suits playing with the big man, so I reluctantly say Carroll.

With Welbeck, up there with Walcott and Young looking to join, Gerrard just behind, we are all pace and passing, which, let's be honest, we are not good enough at when compaired to the best in Europe. Whereas a big physical striker, and the nippy guys around him feeding off the scaps, well, it may work. It would certainly be a potentially more awkward afternoon for opposing defenders.

It's a bit harsh to make a substitution after just 10 minutes don't you think?

We use Carroll to batter them senseless then bring on Welbeck with 20mins to go to slip past for the cheeky undeserved 1-0 win. They don't like it up em these Frenchies.

I like Wellbeck a lot. Statistically his passing completion rates are better than Rooney's this season. A front-three of Young, Rooney and Wellbeck could well give us an edge if we can survive long enough for Rooney to be involved.

I suspect Roy will be aiming for a point each against Sweden & France, and a good victory against Ukraine once Rooney is back

Welbeck is definitely my preference, he's had experience playing for a big name team.

Carroll for me and play to his strengths i.e. get the ball up to him early, I don't care how ugly it is, winning is what matters to me
Yes. If we can get Carroll to run the channels, and be a handful in the air and if the England defenders can lump it forward to him for Defoe to feed off the scraps I think we might just win the tournament.
