I hope so. His long passing game is almost non-existent, the opposite to Boscagli. I'd move him and Cashin (loan) on and just invest in a top young pacy prospect. It's then about who you start with JPvH next season. Very difficult to look past Webster at this point but Dunk and Boscagli will hopefully push him very hard.

Do you rate Ferdi highly as a FB? I didn’t see enough of him including not doing away games?

Commentary team were suggesting Potter (who wanted him as his first signing here?) is very keen on taking Webster to WHU, so we may lose him anyway?

For me, having those two in midfield should allow us to play more attacking full backs than Wieffer, Igor or Veltman. We just need to sign a couple!
I assume Ferdi is one in the wings, assuming his poorly toe ever heals up

Webster?

That would be really sad but we'd recover. His ability to not play more than about 6 games in a row could be a reason why we'd sell despite his recent brilliant form.

Yep, sorry not clear, now amended. I agree, I am a big fan of Webster. Always has a smile on his face even when not playing. I imagine he’s good to have around the dressing room regardless

How would you feel about having Mats as our first-choice right-back going into next season, with Veltman pushing for a spot?

I’ve got to admit, I went from:

“Why the F*ck is Weiffer starting at full-back and Hinch in midfield, when Hinch has played right-back all season?”

to:

“Have we been playing the Dutch Cafu out of position this whole time?”

What looked like a stop-gap solution has really impressed me over the last 4–5 games. I wouldn’t be against the idea at all, especially if it keeps funds free to strengthen in areas that i feel like are more of a priority

Three centrebacks

Not for me. He doesn't have the pace or speed of turn a modern Full Back needs. We need a specialist right back if we're going to progress.

Wieffer was signed as 'One of the best Number 6's in Europe'. That's where I hope to see him next year. Alongside Baleba and allowing the latter to get forward more regularly.
Don’t midfielders need mobility too? And a technique that doesn’t involve constantly under hitting passes? Couple of blinding displays by Hinsh and Gomez yesterday but people still want them relegated for a player who has been average to poor all season

It’s such a small-club mentality thing to go “oh, well I guess since that player that we’ve had to use as emergency cover in position x has done okay there, we don’t need to spend anything can we can just leave him there”. A serious club goes and buys a specialist for that position. We bought him as a midfielder, he’s always played as a midfielder, leave him there FFS!

Don’t rate much of what seen from him in all positions. Squad player - maybe

Keep him away from rb imo

I feel very much the same, I am still awaiting to see what he is all about. RB is a position where timing has to be perfect.

I haven't been Wieffer's biggest fan,
however, he was signed as a defensive midfielder. When he was signed, David Weir described him as 'One of the best Number 6's in Europe'. His performances for Feyenoord and the Netherlands suggest that this is the role in which he is best deployed. I think there's evidence to suggest he'll be decent in that role. Frankly, if we're not going to use him there, his signing was (IMO) a waste of time

He's had a disjointed season, largely due to injury, and rarely been deployed in that role. A full back, however, he isn't and I'll judge him when he gets a, run in his best position.

This doesn't constitute a criticism of Hinshelwood. He, however, has also (as he did in 23/24) had a season disrupted by long term injury. Given his age, I'd suggest, therefore, that his game time needs to be carefully managed. It's very much a squad game now and he'll get plenty of opportunity.

Gomez has had a couple of decent cameos in positions familiar to him. He hasn't been asked to play as a defender. Again, he'll get plenty of game time next season but using his 45 minutes of football yesterday as a stick with which to beat Wiefer seems quite a bit 'Halo and Horns'.

As I say, it's a squad game and there will be plenty of opportunities for all of them. Even more so if we lose Carlos Baleba. In that event, I think Wieffer may very well be crucial to us.
