How would you feel about having Mats as our first-choice right-back going into next season, with Veltman pushing for a spot?

I’ve got to admit, I went from:

“Why the F*ck is Weiffer starting at full-back and Hinch in midfield, when Hinch has played right-back all season?”

to:

“Have we been playing the Dutch Cafu out of position this whole time?”

What looked like a stop-gap solution has really impressed me over the last 4–5 games. I wouldn’t be against the idea at all, especially if it keeps funds free to strengthen in areas that i feel like are more of a priority

Good God no. He is like Hinsh playing there. Gives his all and a lot of great tackles but gets beaten for pace and nous by his man far too often. The amount of tug backs he got away with yesterday when he was wrong side was proof of that.

Hes done really well in that position considering his attributes but is he too slow to be a long term solution? His positional awareness and ability to get infront of a defender to intercept a pass has enabled him to make up for lack of pace (a bit like Veltman).

Think an Ait Nouri type defender would be ideal (but right back). With Lamptey possibly leaving we need some pace in that position. I dont think Hinshelwood is good enough at RB either for similar reasons.

No. As I have already said in other threads, I hope Wieffer and Beleba are our central midfielders….so no to Matts at right back.

Absolutely not a permanent right back option. He is a good tackler, but often those eye pleasing sliding challenges with his long legs are because he's been beaten for pace or by his poor positioning. A good stop gap option and has put in some admirable performances, but he's nowhere near the level required as a proper right back.

No. He’s useful cover, but not a long term option

The trouble with Weiffer is that every now and again he has a rick in him and I'm not harking back to that one. He had a good game yesterday but gave away the penalty and likewise against Wolves (away) he almost gifted them a goal despite being MOM.

Besides all that, we had absolutely no attacking threat from our full backs yesterday in the first half. That overload unlocks Minteh / Mitoma. We need someone with a more attacking threat. That all said, I'm more comfortable with him there than Hinshelwood.

No. No. No.

Has the OP been watching different games to me?

I've seen him consistently burnt off for pace by fast wingers. I've seen him take yellow after yellow. I've seen him give away a stupid penalty. His positioning is just not as good as Veltmans who makes up for a lack of pace with outstanding positioning and profound dark arts.

But it hasn't been a disaster. He has been an average EPL right back which is very, very good for a centre midfielder. He'll always be a welcome option there when specialist full backs can't play.

But we need more than an average full back. We need an Aina or Livramento. Veltman or Kadıoğlu should be the back-ups to a new specialist modern right back who can over lap with Minteh, cross and dribble well having excellent pace and stamina.

With Lamptey surely departing next month, the replacement for his place in the squad is arguably our biggest priority.

Yep

All of this

Not for me. He doesn't have the pace or speed of turn a modern Full Back needs. We need a specialist right back if we're going to progress.

Wieffer was signed as 'One of the best Number 6's in Europe'. That's where I hope to see him next year. Alongside Baleba and allowing the latter to get forward more regularly.

Too slow, sorry.

He is not a full back and was struggling to contain whoever Spurs had on the wing early in yesterday’s game and eventually gave away a penalty with a rash challenge. He is not a disaster at RB but he should be used in midfield where he is likely to be far more effective. Quality player, let’s play him where he should be.

He is OK as a last resort but we should be getting a genuine RB if there is any chance of Ferdi’s toe injury being terminal. Doesn’t look good does it?

We should not be putting square pegs into round holes by choice anymore, unless we have no choice imo

Veltman is no longer the answer as first choice due to age, pace and injuries. Great squad player if he’s happy with that

For me, having those two in midfield should allow us to play more attacking full backs than Wieffer, Igor or Veltman. We just need to sign a couple!

That works better with JPVH and Webster due to their pace. Do you think Igor will move on this summer? Freeing up space for a new CB.

I hope so. His long passing game is almost non-existent, the opposite to Boscagli. I'd move him and Cashin (loan) on and just invest in a top young pacy prospect. It's then about who you start with JPvH next season. Very difficult to look past Webster at this point but Dunk and Boscagli will hopefully push him very hard.
