Our shirt sponsors have been:

British Caledonian
Phoenix Breweries
NOBO (Pronounced "No-Bo" folks)
TSB
Sandtex
Donatello's
Skint

I think Townsend billboards were very prominent around the Goldstone but i don't think they ever graced our shirts.

Reckon that the all blue shirts were Adidas's decision, not the Albion's. The three stripes and the trefoil show up much better on solid colour designs. Adidas didn't really do striped shirts in the 80's, think QPR's kit was probably the closest thing to a striped shirt that they did in th 80's. Can you imagine the outcry on here if we changed to blue shirts next season! It all kicked off when we changed the shade of blue last year.

I'd like to see a modern version of that Bukta kit next season. White arms, three royal blue stripes with blue shorts and white socks.

Cheers, must have been merging the sight of the huge billboard with the shirt, while at the same time thinking how lucky those people that lived in the houses overlooking the ground were!

We did play Manchester United for the Townsend Thoresen Trophy in 1983, losing on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

One of the Albion director's, Keith Wickenden, was chairman of TT and had a lot of cash. He was killed in a helicopter crash under circumstances that were never fully made clear.

Remember the "are you Chelsea in disguise" chants when we went to the B Cal kit, Chelsea were in deep shit in those days, how times change

It was a fixed wing Cessna

I seem to remember his death signalled the end of the good times, he was apparently the very influential man behind Bamber who was the mouthpiece. We had been relegated but after his death everything started falling apart financially. Perhaps one of you NSC'ers knows if this is true?

The Albion already had money problems when Wickenden died, but he had propped up the club when it was losing money in the old first division. Bamber was a good chairman at selling the club to players, but Wickenden had the moolah to back up the promises with cash.

I remember there was an outcry when it was revealed that Steve Foster was on £70,000 a year when we were relegated, and Robinson went on record that he was the highest paid player in the COUNTRY at the Albion in 1982.

We did seem able to outbid most teams at the time. I remember my excitement as it broke on some sports programme that we had paid 350k and won the chase for Mickey Thomas from Manure:lolol: oh dear what a disaster he was :censored:

I don't think Townsend Thoreson were ever on the front of the shirts but we should always where blue and white stripes. If the kit for next season, when the light blue stripes is replaced, if chosen early enough the sponsors name should be screen printed on (like the centenary shirts) and not stuck on with glue to fall off in the wash as they do now.

I think the Phoenix Brewery one was pretty cool. I remember the pinstripes actually being quite thick and the blue being darker - oh and wagon wheels were bigger.

We signed him from Everton for £350k and sold him to Sjoke six months later for £250k

When we played in all white one season (early seventies) - my memory is that we just turned up on the first game of the season and there it was.

It was 1970-71.

My memory is the same that the first anyone knew of the change was when buying the programme for the first game of the season, which had the squad photo on or in it. I got really confused as I'd seen my first games at the end of the previous season, when we had the Arsenal style shirts.

I think there was no outcry when we ditched the stripes at the end of the 70s because we hadn't actually had a regular kit for a while, so they weren't so precious to most.

Wish I knew where my Bukta shirt had gone, though. A mate managed to squeeze into his for the play-off final acouple of years ago.

having only ever known the albion play in blue and white stripes it looked odd (as it always does) to see them play in plain blue on the '101 greatest man u goals' on sky 1 last night during the 1983 cup final. but there must be many of you on here who remember the albion ditching the stripes, and then taking them up again. what was public opinion at the time? were people not outraged when the home colours were changed? i know i'd never vote for anything other than the stripes and i can't imagine ever watching the albion play in anything else.

I don't remember anyone objecting. The point is, we did not change the colour - only the patern. Not like the change from royal blue to incipid light blue! :nono:

Ernest - what kit did we wear at Newcastle in 83 in the 3rd round cup replay - I know we wore yellow when we won promotion up there - if I remember (and I was only listening on the radio) we were defending for 90% of the night and wardy got the winner.

If my senile mind lets me remember correctly we wore the all yellow Caledonian adidas kit same as we wore at Highbury in the semi.
Of course you cannot mention Newcastle cup replay without mentioning all time Albion hero Mr Trelford Mills  :clap2:

Is that the Mr Trelford Mills who disallowed TWO Newcastle goals that night in front of 50,000 hysterical Geordies?

Oh yes, if only I could find (and hopefully squeeze into) one of those beauties. I'd even consider getting a perm to top it off.

I just spat roll out on my keyboard reading that

unfortunately my thatch wouldn't stand up to a perm . . . . . I do have a bukta shirt, bt its so small when I tried getting it on you could see my internal organs pulsating through the coarse nylon weave
