Just been playing poker with Virgin Media.

18-month contract expiring in 35 days (with £200+ bills looming), so had to spring into action.

Offered a decent price, I think? £78 per month for 1130 Mbps internet, 230+ TV channels, Sky Sports HD, TNT Sports, Sky Cinema, Netflix, Anytime Chatter landline etc etc.

But... they're trying to lock me into 24 months. Loads of back and forth. They won't budge. So asked to cancel.

Assume they'll phone me in the next month or so.... if not, kids may have to live without services in the summer. (Not end of world given 5G)
I’d lock in for 2 years at that price !

My VM Broadband and landline evenings and weekends went up from £60 to £90 when I went out of contract. After half an hour of chatbot nonsense I got it down to £38 / month for 500Mb without the landline (though it was cheaper for new customers). I've been with them for donkeys years and have got a ntlworld email which would be a right pain changing.

Ha. My advice is to do in online (chat). Gives less away.

It's important to cancel ahead of 30-day deadline. You avoid a final payment - and look organised.

I told them I want to take my time and shop around, and that I don't mind losing services over summer (partly true), so I'm supercool about cancelling.

We'll see what happens...

Nice. Similar situation, but 500mbps, three boxes and doubling mobile data. Offering £97 (slightly higher today but £200+ soon). I might move house within 18 months and in first attempt won't move from 24 months as you say. So I've cancelled, 30 days notice, to move things forward, either way. Some good other options now that didn't exist previously with fibre now into my house from open reach. Likely means I'll have to unpick the bundle but will give me flexibility. Let's see if they come back.

Not quite locked at that price, can’t they increase it in April next year by inflation plus?
I think the new rules are that they have to state the fixed cost it may increase now rather than a formula based on inflation plus a %. It’s still a marketing con as any media company could easily provide a fixed rate over a 2 year period if it wanted to.

I spent an hour and a half on the phone with BT customer services at work on Friday trying to renegotiate my out of contract monthly charge - just for Broadband alone (no add ons), I was currently paying £49.99 pm for part Fibre 65mbps plus £15 per month for a pay as you go unlimited texts and calls with limited data.

I said I was searching the market for the provider that could give me the most competitive deal (which established the power in the conversation from the outset). I wanted to upgrade to a complete fibre connection which would be able to carry greater speeds as well as reduce my costs.

At first, they offered me £39.99 for same speed - £41.99 for a free upgrade. Then I was offered £31.99 for speeds of 75 mbps but no upgrade.

When I started reciting comparison costs online given with other providers (who were averaging at £25-30pm) pointing out that if they wanted me to renew a contract, they’d have do do much better, BT guy started to climb down.

Eventually, after much haggling and him speaking to his manager, I got him to agree to renew my contract through a comparative broadband site and give me a new EE deal with the phone too.

The outcome is my broadband is now £29.99 pm for speeds of 150 mpbs, fully fibre optic upgrade with free installation and will only increase to £31.99 in 2027 cf to the initial offer which would cost me £45 pm by 2027 + year on year phone increase for half the speeds.

The phone is now a rolling contract of £15 pm that won’t increase at all, for the same price I’m paying now except with unlimited data and 5g instead of patchy 4g.

TL;DR
It’s a buyers market and it’s worth negotiating for a decent deal.

My thoughts are with the BT customer services rep and their family at this difficult time.
You may be able to pay nearly £70pm for essential services (that btw provide me with a lifeline when I’m housebound several days a week) but I can’t.

Negotiating cheaper contracts in a competitive market is exactly what you are suppose to do.

It took that long because I kept being put on hold while the BT bloke conferred with his manager and set up my new contract while I remained on the line.

I've been offered 500mbs, however many channels that I don't watch, TNT, anytime chat on a phone that's been disconnected for 10 years at a cost of £78. I've given them notice, last Wednesday. Not heard anything yet. They told me £120 due Friday just gone plus 30 days notice at another £120 to go on to BB only. That can't be right. I've paid the first £120 so that's for the coming month and I've given 30 day notice prior to month end, so should not have to pay anymore. Thinking of going hardball if they don't call and check out a 5G router with all you can eat data.

Sounds like a good deal to me - Netflix alone is £13 quid a month. Excellent speeds and two sports subscriptions …

I suspect I haven’t - just chose to ignore it because I didn’t find it funny and reiterate my earlier point.

The olde ‘conferred with manager’ ploy.

Went to make a coffee, then played online solitaire.

We pay £30 a month for plus net, we've had two significant service drop outs in 3 years, it's pretty much bulletproof. I upgraded to a new router with 5g backup and a mesh system to improve coverage and run 60plus devices.

We get some of the streaming services free for one reason or another so all in pay about 80 quid a month for everything bar TNT.

Every time I've done a quote for VM it's been a rip off and our neighbours are always complaining about drop outs. Give them the elbow I say
