I would imagine that traditional Republicans are privately livid. There are two levels of f-up here, it all happened on a public service, and a journalist was included in the group.

Shockingly lax.
It's also that it happened on an app where the messages were set to disappear after a certain time, so cannot be used for freedom of information act requests in future. Which is illegal.

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

As far as I’m aware this isn’t a Trump issue. It’s an international politics issue, was marked as News, and as such instead of coming on here and posting a paragraph, what you should’ve done was pop the thread on ignore like I do for threads which don’t interest me 👍🏻
No I'm with you. I've long ago given up on the Trump thread (not got it on 'ignore', but only 'cos I can't be arsed to do it), but this is a separate issue as it isn't about 'Trump' per se, it's a news item in its own right and doesn't deserve to be in a 'dustbin' thread. I wondered why no one had mentioned it.

How often will a journalist accidentally be invited to a chat like this? I imagine it's extremely rare. Which likely means that these highly classified chats are happening on an unsecure platform all the time.

No accident here. Really just an excuse for some grandstanding for JD Vance and his chums, in a manner that will make the Democrats clutch their pearls and scream.

This is no different to Britain othering migrants or those reliant on our benefit system. It’s calculated to play well with a domestic audience, and I predict it will do well domestically.

The Democrats need to stop watching and commenting on Trump’s goons and come up with a plan for America that a majority of Americans will vote for.

I don’t believe anything about this “incident” is accidental.

What benefit would this alleged ploy have?

Don't really understand much of what you are saying here but I disagree about it being intentional. It's just another nail in the coffin that I hope will eventually cause his government to crumble.

I agree that the Democrats need to get a plan together to appeal to working Americans (see Sanders and AOC). But I don't think this was anything other than a truly massive f*** up.

Trump doesn't play 4D chess. Or regular chess. Or checkers. Or tiddly winks.

The only game he plays is throwing rocks of a motorway overpass.

The domestic audience is being fed the narrative that the US taxpayer is currently on the hook for protecting Europe. This feeds that narrative. It feeds the “we’re with you, unlike those elitist Democrats that just kept forking over your tax dollars to protect the lazy feckless other side of the world.”

It’s a powerful narrative because there’s a grain of truth in it. What that narrative conveniently fails to mention is that this role of “protector” gave America huge global soft power, ensured that the US did a lot of business, not just in sales, but in services and maintenance contracts, and saw its worldview and businesses become dominant across huge swathes of the world. US intelligence services have access to intelligence gathered in the UK on UK citizens to an almost unimaginable degree for a foreign nation.

I walked around a shopping centre in Cardiff a week ago, the number of items of clothing that had graphics depicting either the US flag, or US sports teams or institutions was incredible. We have all but been formally annexed.

Our own culture has been largely supplanted, we watch American films, listen to American artists, and eat American fast food. Many of the clothing brands we wear are American in origin. Our technology runs on operating systems designed and controlled by America.

We have allowed America in, part of the reason that we have allowed this, has been due to America’s role in the postwar peace. America has grown weary of fulfilling its obligations, yet there is no easy way to decouple ourselves. What now?

A large part of America wishes to be rid of its overseas obligations, it is also, let’s be frank here, broke. Trump will do nothing to fix this, he just wants to cut taxes, but he’s happy to misdirect the reasons for America’s ills at targets overseas.

The UK gov have responded by saying that they have confidence in US security systems and repeated that they are "our greatest ally".

Are they even an ally now, let alone our greatest?

Hegseth says it didnt happen and the journalist involved is a discredited hoaxer who's previously lied when he reported on things that also actually did happen.

So that's OK then.

I assume X is also in full flow attacking the journalist.

While I think it's important someone in Europe has Trumps ear (which I think Starmer is trying to do), I do wish we'd 'Love Actually' it and tell them where to go.
