Hegseth says it didnt happen and the journalist involved is a discredited hoaxer who's previously lied when he reported on things that also actually did happen.

So that's OK then.

I assume X is also in full flow attacking the journalist.
Sadly, not everybody got the memo since it's already been confirmed as being authentic.

No accident here. Really just an excuse for some grandstanding for JD Vance and his chums, in a manner that will make the Democrats clutch their pearls and scream.
I do see where you are coming from, but they could've put the same message out via orthodox means, not a convulted, potentially illegal, feck up.

I agree that the Democrats need to get a plan together to appeal to working Americans (see Sanders and AOC). But I don't think this was anything other than a truly massive f*** up.

Trump doesn't play 4D chess. Or regular chess. Or checkers. Or tiddly winks.

The only game he plays is throwing rocks of a motorway overpass.

Is this not typical of his work then?

I really don’t see journalists getting invited into this type of group chat accidentally. This smells exactly like one of his PR exercises to me.

I think the advantage of this method is perceived “authenticity.”

If you put something out through press releases, there’s an automatic assumption that it’s been fettled and PR’d to within an inch of its life. This is “just the guys chatting, saying it like it is.”

That type of rudeness, excused as “plain speaking” goes a long way with MAGA’s target audience. The fact that it also makes their opponents scream is just icing on the cake for them.

Agree to disagree.

I don't see a journalist getting deliberately invited to this chat with an active CIA agent (that Goldberg doesn't name) and including actual details on targets, weapons and assets two hours before the strikes (that again, Goldberg leaves out).

It seems Goldberg is the only one that actual cared to keep the secrets secret.

Happy to be corrected, but when I watched him being asked about it, I didn't ever hear him deny that Goldberg had been added to the chat. He straight away went into full attack mode (no pun intended) on the journalist, what a great job the forces had done in taken out the Houthis and slagged off the previous administration. And then deny that any mission details were given, which they were – and Goldberg has the screenshots to prove it.

group chats like this shouldn't even exist. two likely possibilities, either name similar to someone in the Whitehouse or, more like and interesting, someone added him deliberatly to expose the group existance. they have broken security protocol and probably laws, any normal administration would have binned off people for such a security breach. doesn't seem likely a setup (by Vance or Hegseth at least).

We know how this plays out. The journalist is now attacked by those involved, none of whom get fired.

An intern or assistant who actually added the wrong JG gets fired and made a public scapegoat.

That's what I meant when he said it didn't happen

Ah sorry – I thought you meant he was completely denying the fact that the journalist was even in the chat.

Perhaps, but I genuinely believe that stunts like this are “business as usual” for the current regime.

It may have been a genuine cock-up, but my money’s on the MAGA boys wanting to get their message out loud and clear. I’d argue that they’ve achieved that, and in a manner that ensured coverage globally.

I think we all know that resigning as an honourable action is likely to be a rare occurrence with the current regime, so I suspect any consequences will be limited to those outside the “inner circle.”

A fascinating read about how the whole Signal debacle unfolded.

Hegseth claimed war plans were not discussed - Goldberg's article shows that to be a total lie. Trump calls Goldberg's inclusion a 'glitch' which he blames not on Waltz but on one of his staffers / underlings.

The incompetence is bad enough but it is the lying that is so damaging. Democracy ceases to function effectively without truth and transparency, and Trump's government clearly has no regard for either.

This administration seem hellbent on alienating the world against the US... why? Firstly it was Canada, Mexico and China and then they turned their aim to Europe.

My biggest question though is, Why are we trying to rub shoulders with these guys? They insult us at every opportunity. They put a levy on our steel, which as we speak has gone unanswered and to cap it all, we are told that we are apparently not doing our bit in terms of defence and to up our game. Why are we putting up with this?

In return we have offered a second State Visit and stand by the sentiment that we have a "Special relationship" which has never been stronger. Its time for those in power to wake up and grow a backbone.

It has been suggested that a breathalyser is attached to his (Hegseth) phone, to prevent him using it when inebriated. Which seems to be often.

You may have noticed that Trump is incredibly thin skinned. What do you imagine growing a backbone involves?

Whatever that is needs to not trigger:
  • Targeted UK sanctions
  • Cessation of US intelligence sharing
  • Cancellation of Trident support contracts
  • Cancellation of conventional military logistics contracts
  • Immediate US withdrawal from NATO
  • Immediate vacation of US air defences from UK/European soil
  • A dedicated attempt to crash the UK economy for shits and giggles
That’s just off the top of my head.

My point is that, given the potential for severe and immediate military and economic consequences, Britain needs to tread carefully more than any European nation.

Trump is a malignant narcissist and Britain’s Special Relationship just became sPeCiaL. But it can’t just walk away from that 80 year partnership without a lot of planning and alternative arrangements.

In the meantime, provoking a malignant narcissist to get a bit of catharsis is a really dumb idea. It will result in a geopolitical punishment beating.

Truly hilarious. The amount the Orange one banged on about data leakage via HC and then Hunter Biden's laptop. The hypocrisy of the man will know no bounds when he does sweet FA about this.
He deflected the whole thing by trying to discredit the journalist and the publication they worked for. Saying that they're more like a magazine that won't be around much longer, as if it makes it any better.
