Looks like he is going to get away with it again ! Republican Senators are just too scared of Trump to vote for the quite obvious offences he has committed despite the Republican VP very nearly caught with the nuclear " Football " by the mob.

McConnell has thrown his " weight " behind acquittal......

For weeks, Mitch McConnell has been the Hamlet of these impeachment proceedings, seemingly giving conflicting messages about how he viewed the ongoing drama in the Senate.

He made public comments condemning Donald Trump, but when the time came for early votes he sided with the defence.

It appears that drama is now over, as the Senate minority leader is reportedly circulating a letter to Republican colleagues saying he will vote against conviction.

In doing so, McConnell demonstrates that he knows that the centre of gravity among Senate Republicans sits with acquittal - and with it, he dashes Democratic hopes that he could lead a late move to sway his partisan colleagues to turn against the ex-president.

It's laughable that the senate tries him. Once impeached the trial should be held in a court of law with impartial jurors and judges.

Can you imagine if, in the trials of Johnathan Aitken, Jeffrey Archer or Fiona Onasanya jurors were required to be Labour or Conservative party members ? No-one would have taken the verdict seriously.

He also seems to be voting on the basis that it's unconstitutional (which has already been rejected), not on the actual facts.

I think the Democrats know they will never win but want to show the world what Trump did that day.

They have also just voted for witnesses which could add weeks onto the trial. Trumps team were not prepared for this at all. Every witness has to be voted in by the senate first so a vote every time. This could get interesting as it could show the defence team has been lieing in the trial

His argument being that trump is no longer in power, when it was McConnell who refused to proceed with the trial while Trump was in office.

I think this is the strategy. Show what absolute scumbag he really is and then identify those who would support and so protect him.

looks like in order to avoid delaying Biden's agenda getting pushed through they have abandoned the talk of witnesses, it's down to Senators to vote with their conscience ( iif they have one ) after looking at the facts, or, voting as Trump wants them to do.... Sad times indeed, what was once thought to be the home of freedom and democracy brought down to voting on party lines whatever the crimes committed. Joe, you have just four years to try to turn this garbage scowl around, good luck.

Very simply, the Democrats need to get to work on Monday to choose the candidates they're going to run against the 43 and start organising those campaigns. Speak to Stacey Abrams about how to get everyone registered and engaged early on, so when it's time to start voting people are ready and keen. It shouldn't be too difficult to build a case against the 43, it's just a question of selecting the candidate and planning their campaign. Beto O'Rourke has done some good work in Texas, for example - hopefully there are plenty more like him.

Trump will be in a court of law soon, as New York has loads of evidence of tax evasion.

Well good luck with that.
Everyone knows he ain't gonna last long. This Joe Biden is a sad, pale and declining shadow of the man of 25 years ago. His presidency will be passive, short, uninspiring and ' woke ' orientated ' A ghastly compromise.

Haha, excellent post. Biden's a man of competence and intelligence and his administration is quietly and competently getting on with the job in a manner that Trump and his clowns were never able to.

The grown ups are back in the building.

If 43 spineless senators shamed themselves by voting for Trump for fear of violence if they did the right thing, what chance do all 43 democrat candidates have of coming through the elections against them alive?

Well that's that.

He may get done for some tax issues now, but he's a busted flush cut off from twitter and his ongoing mental decline will mean he is unlikely to trouble us again.

Yesterday's Zero.

How often does a Senator get killed? Incredibly rarely, as they're well protected. In reality, I think the political temperature of the US will start to come down now the trial is over. The newsfeed isn't just all Trump, all the time. He's going to get back in for sure, but it's of little consequence. He's yesterday's news now. President Biden is cracking on with his agenda and now the Senate is able to get to work as well, there will be actual laws passed rather than Executive Order after Executive Order. That's the difference between an organised administration and a shambolic disgrace which came before.

The truth of it is, is that Trump could have laid a steaming turd on the floor of the Senate watched by everyone, and 40 odd Republican Senators would have applauded and acquitted him for doing so.

How often does the Capitol building get over-run by a hate filled murderous mob? Incredibly rarely - until now.
The grown-ups may have taken back the building, but the good ole MAGA boys are outside.
With conspiracy theories galore .............. and guns.
