We done a magical split route, Brighton to Bedford, Bedford to Wellingborough, Wellinbourough to Nottingham, reversed coming back, journey was probably half hour longer, but a lot cheaper. Even though it was the KX to Notts train we picked up half way up.
The more changes the bigger risk of a missed connection - always my fear. Sadly trains just can't be relied on.

It's bad enough in London, cancelled 7-10 to brum right now as I wait to leave for Manchester. The further north you go the more random it gets.

Those mugs that voted Tory for the levelling up deserve all they get though

On the way it went to plan. On the way back we also missed the Grantham train due to delays. Thankfully a very decent train guard told us to go to Peterborough and change there. Ended up in London about fifteen minutes earlier than we were due. Back in Brighton 9.45 p.m. Not bad going.
That's pretty good going

Will try and remember that for next season!

Got a seat on the Hull Trains, no problem. The next one (LNER) was only 10 mins or so behind and twice the length.

Getting to London wasn't really the issue. Getting to / from Grantham / Nottingham was a massive PITA though.
Oh agreed - At Grantham, they seemed to be warning us of potential fines if you held LNER tix, and got on the Hull train.
