I'm only 17 and I went to Gillingham. Obviously I wouldn't have if my Dad/Grandad/Uncle/etc didn't

Border country.East Preston.
McGhee.I haven't seen Albion play this well before and he has a lot more obstacles stacked against him. This team thrills me more than Mickey's and it's more secure.

tho MM has great potential

though, i did go to one fans nite out , with the legendary Liam Brady, who said he was with the team for the 'long haul' only to piss off a few weeks later!

Hardly surprising when you remember the c nut who was chairman, aided and abetted by 2 more c nuts-I'd have pissed off a lot quicker than Brady did.

Don't know about that - Adams bought in that core of Rogers/Oatway/Carpenter in midfield, Cullip at the back. Much of Horton's team didn't last for long, for various reasons - Minton left, Thomas faded, Arnott was exchanged, Walton was sub-standard (at least I think he was a Horton signing).

I am not arguing with the choice of either MA or MM just pointing out that when BH took over we were the worst we had ever been and he took us up the league to within a whisker of the playoffs.

It is well documented that when MA arrived he told DK that 7 of the players weren't good enough and his honesty got him the job rather than suck up and say what he thought DK wanted to hear.

I though MA signed Walton as he had done when at Fulham.

Mike Baily not that anyone here remember's him

Whilst he was manager we reached our highest ever position 7th in the old 1st Div (now Prem) but he got sacked as we were winning 1 - 0 and some of the fans found it boring.

He was replaced by one of our worst ever, Jimmy Melia, but he did get us to Wembley, think the cup games were the only games we won with him as manager.

The legacy of Micky Adams lives on to this day, nearly four years after he left us. When Taylor, Coppell and McGhee took over, their jobs were made a lot easier because of the good work of the Adams' era.

Out of the two listed I've narrowly, very narrowly, gone for Adams. A year ago I wouldn't have had to think twice, hopefully in a year's time it'll be McGhee who'll be the shoo-in.

BensGrandad is correct about the early weeding done by Horton but Adams built up a system that is still in place today.

.... and I would point out to all those going on about Mullery, Bailey, the original Peter Taylor etc that the poll says RECENT Albion managers. Charles Webb would be in the running for greatest all-time manager.

What doesn't appear to have been mentioned is that Adams was given money, probably within the top three budgets in the Third Division. He also reaped the benefits of returning to Brighton and regardless of all the whingeing about Withdean, it iwas a massive and uplifting feeling to not have to go to Gillingham. That magic has long since gone though and Withdean is now a disadvantage

McGhee got us promoted, against the odds, seeing as he had to make do with other managers players and the youth team. He also has the bonus of working with the best youth players this club has produced. He has not yet had the chance to compete on equal footing with other teams, financally, Micky Adams did.

Where McGhee wins hands down, though, is in his tactics. he is a giant in comparison to MA in that field, who seems to think huff and puff and commitment is enough.

I think McGhee for two reasons, one general and one specific.

1) Adams never managed us at this level so it is hard to say how he would have done whereas McGhee seems to be doing a decent job at the moment.

2) We got dicked by Southampton youth team in the League Cup under Adams - last Saturday we very nearly beat a full-strength Spurs in the FA Cup. Away.

Aside from that there is the budget stuff, didn't Adams secure a virtually new team for the start of 99/00 season and then made a load more signings for the start of 00/01? Also he ran out on us at the first opportunity, not before touting himself for every job going. This left a sour taste with me.

Agree with PEVVERS though - Steve Gritt is the daddy of them all. How he took a side that couldn't have won if they had played a bunch of one-legged blind people and turned them into a side that didn't lose at home for the rest of the season - beating a lot of promotion chasing sides in the process - is beyond me. That guy deserves the freedom of Brighton or something.

I thought Lawro was a Taylor deal with another player who i can't remember the name of.

For the poll i have gone for McGhee. Because he has integrity honesty and admits when he's wrong. MA was OK but had none these qualities. As far as i am concerned he was only in it for himself. Good luck to him though.

No. Mullery bought Lawrenson and Gary Williams from Preston for the start of the 77/78 season (our first in the very old Div 2). They had impressed in a 1-1 draw at the Goldstone in our promotion year.

In light of recent performances, produced by some very ordinary players, MM has to take a great deal of credit. His recent statements about wishing to stay with us and effectively calling on Knight to get his, and his pet youngsters' contracts sorted, show that he wants to be here. MA never showed any commitment to us and walked at the first chance.

Therefore, of the two, it must be MM. Now, if we are talking "ever", there would be many more candidates. One Alan Mullery springs to mind!

I was edging towards Adams but reading Icy Gulls post brought home to me how much MM has done under the most financial restrictions any manager has had whilst we have been at Withdean. MM wins it for me.

All those talking about other managers.

Every one of these managers mentioned has also had the benefit of working under a top notch board.

For me it Mcghee. I think Adams brought us back but what a groundswell of great feelings about the club then. Back to Withdean, spank mansfield and away we go.

We never expected to be through Div 2 quite so quickly and I thought that caought the board out. The plan was probably to consolidate for two years and then with Falmer (!!) on the way we would go from there. However we are back in Div 1 and personally I do not think that Adams would have had the tactical nous to keep us there with what we have. To a degree he is too emotional for this current situation.

I believe that Mcghee does hear some of the shite coming from the idiots at Withdean but is bit more impervious to that sort of thing.

Big man but a hard man who is not firghtened to stamp his wuthority on a dressing room that has a fair few characters in it.

The right man for the right job at the right time.

God hopes he stays.
